Two similar island quotations: the real differences
You have two quotations that look alike and need to know why one costs more.
Two quotations that look alike usually differ in two or three lines, not in the headline price. Put them side by side, mark each line as included, excluded or unknown, and add the missing lines to the lower quote before you decide. The cheaper quote may stop being cheaper.
Use this guide with what a full-board package includes and excludes. The resort inclusion comparator and the island trip cost calculator do the sums.
Which lines most often differ?
Copy this table. Fill in Quote A and Quote B from each quotation. Where a line is missing, write “unknown”, not “no”.
| Line | Quote A | Quote B |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and nights | ||
| Room type and occupancy | ||
| Meals by day | ||
| Drinks | ||
| Boat, both ways | ||
| Marine park fee | ||
| Jetty and parking | ||
| Activities | ||
| Taxes and service charge | ||
| Cancellation terms |
Our guides on meals and drinks, boat legs and taxes and service charge explain the lines that cause most gaps.
How does a cheaper quote end up dearer?
Imagine two quotations for four people. Quote A is RM X lower than Quote B. After you ask, you learn that Quote A leaves out the marine park fee, jetty parking and the service charge.
Add the reported marine park rates for a Malaysian family, RM5 for each adult and RM2 for a child [1], and ask the agency for the parking and service charge amounts. If the three lines add up to more than RM X, Quote A is the dearer one. If they add up to less, Quote A is still the lower. The sum, not the headline, tells you.
Always add the missing lines to the lower quote, not the other way. Then compare the final totals.
How do you ask both agencies the same thing?
Send the same message to both, so the answers line up.
- Please list the room type and how many people it sleeps.
- Please list the meals for each day, and whether drinks are included.
- Does the boat cover both directions, and which jetty?
- Is the marine park fee included?
- Are any taxes, service charge, parking or jetty fees extra?
- What are the cancellation terms if the boat does not sail?
Ask for answers in writing. A clear reply helps you decide.
What if the answers still look the same?
Then compare what is not written. Look at the cancellation terms, the way the agency handles a boat that does not sail and how fast it replies. A fair price from an agency that answers clearly is worth more than a slightly lower price from one that does not.
A better fit if…
The lower quote may suit you if you are confident arranging the missing lines yourself. The higher quote may suit you better if you want those lines handled and written down. Either is a good choice when the lines match and the reply is clear.
Common questions
Why do two similar packages have different prices?
Often a line differs: the room type, the meals, the boat legs, a fee that is in one and not the other, or the dates. Put both into a table and mark each line as included, excluded or unknown. The gap usually sits in two or three lines.
Which line should I check first?
Start with the boat transfer and the room type, because they change the price most and are easiest to misread. Then check meals, the marine park fee and any taxes or service charge.
What if one agency will not answer my questions?
Treat silence as information. A quotation you cannot verify is a quotation you cannot compare. Ask again in writing, and consider the agency that answers clearly.
Should I choose the cheaper quotation?
Only after both quotations cover the same lines. A lower price can leave out items that the other includes. Compare the totals after adding what is missing.
