Does your resort pick you up at the jetty?

You are unsure who meets you at the jetty and want that answered before you pay.

Some island resorts collect guests from the jetty in their own boat, and some leave you to find your own boat. For example, one source reports that resort boats collect guests for Lang Tengah [1]. Because this differs by resort, ask each one the questions below and keep the answers in writing.

The questions follow the order of your day. If you are still choosing a jetty, our jetty connection planner helps you test a real flight against the boat times. Our Merang jetty arrival guide shows one example.

Who actually meets you at the jetty?

The first thing to find out is whether a named person, from the resort or the agency, meets you at the jetty. A resort boat that collects you is different from a public boat you buy a ticket for yourself.

On Lang Tengah, one source describes a public boat from Merang with set days and times, and a separate resort boat that collects guests [2]. Treat these as two different services with different timings and different costs.

What should you ask before the day?

Send these as one message:

  • Does the resort collect us from the jetty, or do we buy our own boat tickets?
  • Which jetty, which time, and who do we look for when we arrive?
  • Is the pickup in the room price, or is it an extra line on the quotation?
  • What number can we call if we are late or lost?
  • Is the same arrangement used on the way back?

If the answer to the first question is “we collect you”, ask whether that is both ways. Our guide on the jetty-to-island transfer in a package explains why a one-way transfer is easy to miss.

What about luggage?

Luggage handling is where small gaps cause the biggest stress. Ask who carries bags from the boat to the room, whether there is a weight limit, and whether anything is charged.

A shared boat may have its own limit, so check before you pack. Our guide on luggage limits on shared boats goes through what to look for.

What if you arrive early or late?

Boats do not wait for every flight. Earliest speedboats from Kuala Besut are reported at about 07:00 to 08:00, with the last at about 17:00 to 17:30 [3], and other jetties run to their own schedules.

Ask what happens if your flight is late: does the boat wait, does the resort rebook you, or do you pay again? If you land after the last boat, a mainland night may be the safest plan, and our guide on a mainland night as a safety net covers it.

What do you do with a vague answer?

“It is arranged” is not an answer you can plan around. Ask for a time, a place and a name, and write them beside your booking.

If the resort cannot give them, that is useful information, and it is a good moment to compare with another option. Our guide to reading two similar quotations shows how to do that calmly.

A better fit if…

This checklist is a better fit if you are travelling with children, older parents or a lot of luggage, because those groups feel gaps in pickup most. It is a lesser fit if you are a confident solo traveller who is happy to find your own boat, though the same questions still save time.

Send us your jetty, your arrival time and who is travelling with you, and we will help you put the pickup questions to each resort in the same order.

Common questions

Do island resorts always pick you up at the jetty?

No. Some resorts run their own boats to collect guests, and others expect you to buy a boat ticket yourself. It differs by resort and even by season. Ask in writing whether pickup is included, which jetty it uses, and whether the same arrangement applies for the return.

Is jetty pickup included in the room price?

Not always. It can be bundled into a package, listed as a separate line, or not offered at all. Read the quotation line by line, and ask the agent or resort to name each transfer leg, in both directions, so you can see what you are paying for.

Who carries my luggage from the boat?

That depends on the resort and the landing. Some have staff or carts, and others expect guests to carry their own bags, especially if the boat lands on a beach. Ask who handles luggage, whether there is a weight limit, and whether it costs extra.

What if my flight is late and I miss the last boat?

Ask before you book. Last boats from some jetties are reported at around 17:00 to 17:30, and boats do not always wait. Find out whether the resort rebooks you, and consider a mainland night so a late flight does not cost you a booking.
