A mainland night on return as a safety net

You are heading home from the island and a late boat could put your onward travel at risk.

A spare mainland night on the way home is worth paying for when your onward trip leaves little margin. If you fly or drive a long way on the day you return, one late or cancelled boat can break the chain. If your journey is short and flexible, you may not need it.

This page helps you decide with your own numbers. It sits beside our guide on the journey in four legs, and our page on a cancelled return boat covers what to do if it happens.

How much margin does your trip home really have?

Count the time from the boat arriving at the jetty to the moment you must be somewhere else. Then compare it with the real steps in between.

  1. The boat arriving, which can be late for sea or tide reasons.
  2. Walking from the boat, collecting bags and finding your car or transfer.
  3. The drive or ride to the airport, station or home.
  4. The buffer you need at the airport or check-in.

On the east coast, the last boats from Kuala Besut are reported at about 17:00 to 17:30 [1]. If your boat is the last one of the day and your flight is that evening, there is no room for anything to go wrong. Make a note of every step that has no spare time.

If the answer is “not enough”, the safety night is cheaper than a missed flight.

What should the hotel night look like?

Keep it simple and flexible. You are buying a bed near the jetty, not a second holiday.

  • Choose a place close to the jetty or the main road home.
  • Look for free cancellation up to the afternoon of the day.
  • Ask whether you can arrive late if the boat is late.
  • Check that the car can stay for the extra night if you drive.
  • Keep the confirmation where you can open it offline.

If your resort or agent helped arrange the island, ask whether they can arrange the extra night too. Compare their price with one you book yourself, as our guide on pre-boat hotels explains.

When is a fixed plan fine?

A safety night is not always needed. If you return in the morning with a whole day before your flight, you already have margin. If you are driving a short distance home, a late boat means a later arrival, not a missed connection.

Our page on a spare day before a flight covers the more cautious option of leaving the island early.

What should you ask before you book?

Send these to the hotel:

  • What is the cancellation rule, and by what time?
  • Can we check in late, up to a time we choose?
  • Is there a key box or a guard for a very late arrival?
  • Is there an early breakfast for a morning drive?
  • Can the car stay for the extra night?

Then message your resort or boat operator and ask: if the boat is late or cancelled, who do we tell, and what is the next sailing? Our page on cancelled boat transfers lists the questions.

A better fit if…

A safety night may be a better fit if:

  • your flight or long drive is on the same day as the return boat.
  • you are travelling with children or older relatives.
  • the island trip falls near monsoon edges or rough-sea warnings.

A same-day return may be a better fit if you have a whole spare day, or your journey home is short. Use the island trip cost calculator to see what the extra night adds.

Tell us when your onward flight or drive is and which jetty you return to, and we will help you test your margin and ask for a flexible mainland night.

Common questions

Do I need a mainland night after coming back from the island?

Only if your trip home has no margin. If you fly out or drive a long way on the day you return, a late or cancelled boat can cause a chain of missed connections. A spare night turns that risk into a plan, but it is optional if your journey is short and flexible.

Can I book the night and cancel later?

Some hotels allow free cancellation up to a certain time, others do not. Ask for the cancellation rule in writing before you pay, and look at the exact cut-off time. A refundable rate can be worth a small extra cost.

What if the last boat is full or does not run?

Tell the resort and the operator at once and ask for the next option in writing. A mainland hotel booked for that night makes the delay a small change instead of a scramble. Keep your messages.

Should I book it the same time as the island?

You can, if the rate is flexible. Some travellers book the night at the same time as the island and cancel if the return is smooth. Others wait until the weather and boat news is clearer. Choose the way that fits your budget.
