Bus from the airport to jetty towns
You want a cheap road leg and need to know whether a bus can get you there.
A bus can work for the road leg, but only if its last departure and drop-off point fit your boat. We found no sourced airport bus timetable to the jetty towns. Check the route, the frequency, the last departure and the drop-off before you count on it.
Keep a minivan or taxi as a back-up, because a missed boat usually costs more than the fare you saved.
Our guide on airport taxi and e-hailing to jetties covers the other options. For the whole chain, use the jetty connection planner.
What should you check before choosing a bus?
Work through five points, and write the answers down:
- Does a bus run from the airport, or only from the city centre?
- What is the last departure on your day?
- Where does it drop you, and how far is that from the jetty?
- Can it carry your luggage?
- What happens if your flight is late?
If any answer is unknown, ask the resort or a local operator before you commit.
How do bus, minivan and taxi compare?
| Option | Strength | What can go wrong | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public bus | Low fare | Fixed times; drop-off may be far from the jetty | Light packers with spare time |
| Shared minivan | Door-to-door in places; fare per person | Leaves when full or at a set time | Budget groups with a flexible arrival |
| Taxi | Direct and flexible | Higher fare for the whole car | Groups, late arrivals, heavy bags |
| Resort transfer | Named driver, set time | Cost may be added to the package | Families, tight boats |
Reported van and taxi times give you a yardstick: about an hour from Kota Bharu airport to Kuala Besut [1], and about 75 minutes from Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty [2]. A bus on the same road will not be quicker, and may be slower.
How do you add up your own cost?
Work out the cost per person for each option, with your own numbers. Add the fare, the last-mile ride from the drop-off to the jetty, and a margin for delay. Then ask what a missed boat would cost you.
If the last Kuala Besut speedboat is reported at about 17:00 to 17:30 [3], a bus that arrives close to that time is a risk. A slightly dearer option with a safe margin is the better value. Our island trip cost calculator helps you add the lines.
When is a night near the jetty cheaper than a taxi?
If the only bus arrives after dark or close to the last boat, a night near the jetty can be cheaper than a taxi for the whole group. See budget stays near jetties: what to look for and sleeping at the jetty when it is workable.
A better fit if…
A bus is a better fit if you travel light, land early and have a clear drop-off near the jetty. A minivan or taxi may be a better fit if you carry heavy bags, travel with children or have a tight boat. For more on the cost side, read self-drive vs coach to a jetty from KL.
Common questions
Is there a bus from the airport to Kuala Besut or Merang?
We found no sourced airport bus timetable for these jetty towns, so treat a direct airport bus as unconfirmed. Ask the resort or a local operator which public or shared options run on your day, and keep a taxi or minivan as a back-up.
Is a minivan the same as a bus?
No. A minivan or van carries fewer people and may leave when full or on a booked time. Reported road times for vans are about an hour from Kota Bharu airport to Kuala Besut and about 75 minutes from Tawau airport to Semporna. Ask about fixed departures.
How do I know if a bus will make my boat?
Write down the bus's last departure and its drop-off point, add the walk or ride to the jetty, then compare the total with the boat's latest check-in. If the margin is small or the bus is the only option, plan a night near the jetty.
Is the lowest-cost option really cheaper?
Not if it makes you miss the boat. Add up the fare, the last-mile ride and a margin for delay. If a miss would cost a night, the safer option is usually the better value.
