Airport taxi or e-hailing to the jetty

You land in a small coastal city and wonder whether a car will meet you.

For a leg that ends at a boat with a cut-off, a pre-booked transfer is the most realistic choice. An airport taxi comes next, and e-hailing is a back-up you check in advance.

The road leg is long. Reported times are about an hour from Kota Bharu airport to Kuala Besut [1]. They are about 30 minutes from Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang [2], and about 75 minutes from Tawau airport to Semporna [3].

Our jetty connection planner helps you place the road leg between landing and boat. For the whole chain, see the four legs of a Malaysian island journey.

How do the four options compare?

We compare them by what can go wrong, because fares change and we did not find a sourced fare table.

OptionStrengthWhat can go wrongBest for
Resort or agent transferA named driver and timeYou wait if the flight is lateBoats with a cut-off, families
Airport taxiAsk whether a taxi stand operates at your airportFare and wait varyLight luggage, flexible timing

The result is that certainty is what you buy when you pre-book.

What should you check before choosing e-hailing?

Open your app in the departure city a few days before and see whether it shows cars near the airport and the jetty town. Check the pickup rules at the airport, since some airports use a set pickup area. Save a back-up taxi number.

Ask yourself what happens if no driver accepts a long trip to a small jetty. That one question usually settles whether e-hailing is your first choice or your back-up.

How do you book a transfer in writing?

Send these questions to the resort or agent and keep the reply:

  • Is the airport-to-jetty transfer included, or can you arrange it?
  • What is the pickup place and the time?
  • What is the driver’s name and number?
  • What happens if my flight is delayed?
  • What is the cost, and is it per car or per person?

Our guide on road delays on the way to the jetty explains how much buffer to hold, and how early should you arrive at the jetty covers the last link.

What about the trip back?

The return leg is usually harder, because you may leave the island on a fixed boat and need a car at the jetty on time. Ask the resort to book the return pickup too. See also bus from the airport to jetty towns if you travel on a budget.

A better fit if…

A resort transfer is a better fit if you carry luggage, travel with children or have a tight boat. A taxi or e-hailing back-up may be a better fit if you land early with hours to spare and travel light. For a late landing, consider a mainland night instead.

Tell us your airport, your jetty and your flight time, and we will help you ask the resort whether a transfer is included and what the back-up is if the car does not appear.

Common questions

Can I rely on e-hailing at the airport to reach the jetty?

We found no source that confirms e-hailing coverage on these routes, so treat it as unconfirmed. Check that your app shows drivers in the area, and keep a back-up such as an airport taxi or a pre-booked transfer in case no driver accepts the trip.

Is a pre-booked transfer worth it?

For a boat with a cut-off, usually yes. A named driver at a known place removes the search for a car. Ask the resort or agent whether the transfer is included, and get the pickup time and place in writing.

How long does the road take?

Reported times are about 1 hour from Kota Bharu airport to Kuala Besut, about 30 minutes from Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang and about 75 minutes from Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty. Ask your resort for a figure on your day.

What if the driver is late or does not come?

Have the driver's number and the resort's number saved, and keep a back-up option in mind. Our guide on road delays and safety margins shows how much buffer to hold before the last boat.
