Backup plan when the jetty is closed

You reach the jetty and find it closed, so you need a calm plan.

If the jetty is closed, first find out why and for how long, then ask the operator and your resort about another departure. If nothing runs, plan a safe night near the jetty and try again in the morning. Keep every message.

This page gives you the order to work in. For the bigger picture, see the journey in four legs, and read our guide to rough sea warnings, a common cause.

What do you do first?

Work in this order.

  1. Ask whoever is at the jetty why it is closed, and how long they expect it to last.
  2. Call the boat operator and ask whether any boat is running from elsewhere.
  3. Message your resort with your name, reference, location and what you were told.
  4. Check the official sea warning, in case weather is the reason. Warnings are reported to update about every three hours [1].
  5. Take photos of any notice and screenshot your booking.

The reason matters. A weather closure may last a day or more. A repair or event may end sooner.

Can you use another departure point?

Sometimes another jetty or boat can reach your island, but only the operator or resort can confirm it. Ask these questions:

  • Is there another jetty, and which one?
  • How far is it by road, and how long does it take?
  • Who runs the boat from there, and when does it leave?
  • What does it cost, and who pays the difference?
  • Can you confirm it by message?

Do not travel to a second jetty on a guess. Our guide on which jetty your booking uses shows how to find your booked departure point in the first place.

Where do you stay if nothing runs?

Book a room near the jetty that you can cancel, and tell the hotel why you are arriving late. Ask for an early breakfast and for the car to stay if you drive. Keep dinner simple. Our page on what to do if you miss the last boat covers the night in more detail.

If you have children or older parents, a room is nearly always the kinder choice. A long wait at a closed jetty is tiring and gives you nothing.

What do you tell the resort?

Ask the resort in writing.

  • Will you hold our room tonight and tomorrow?
  • Will you charge for the missed night?
  • Can we shorten the stay, or move the dates?
  • Who is our contact tomorrow morning?

Compare the answers with your booking terms. Our page on who pays when a connection fails explains how responsibility is usually shared.

What proof should you keep?

Keep a folder on your phone with the notice at the jetty, your ticket and booking, every message and call time, and receipts for extra nights and transport. If you have insurance, read travel insurance and missed boat connections before you spend more.

A better fit if…

Waiting nearby may be a better fit if the jetty has a confirmed reopening time. A mainland night may be a better fit if the closure is open-ended, it is getting late, or you travel with children or older parents. If you are heading home, read how to protect your flight when a return boat is cancelled.

Send us your jetty, your resort and what you have been told, and we will help you work out the questions to ask and a safe plan for the night.

Common questions

Why might a jetty be closed?

Common reasons are rough seas and sea warnings, very low water, repair work, a local event or a safety decision by the operator or authority. Ask what the reason is and how long it is expected to last, because that decides your options.

Can I use a different jetty?

Sometimes, but only if the operator or your resort confirms it. A different jetty may mean a longer road, a different boat and a different cost. Ask who is arranging it and who pays, and get the answer in writing.

What do I tell the resort if the jetty is closed?

Message the resort at once with your name, booking reference, location and the reason you were given. Ask whether they will hold the room, whether another departure is possible, and who to contact next. Keep their reply.

Should I wait at the jetty?

Only if there is a clear reason to expect a boat soon, such as a confirmed delay. If not, move to a room near the jetty and try again in the morning. Rest and a clear plan are worth more than a long wait.
