School holiday calendar and island demand

You need to know which school weeks fill the islands before you pick a date.

School breaks are the biggest driver of island demand, and the longest breaks fill the islands first. The 2027 dates reported for Group A and Group B states sit about one day apart, which can matter when a resort has few rooms left. Use this guide to line up the calendar, the season and your budget before you ask for a quotation.

For the full date question, start with when is the best time to visit Malaysian islands. Then use this page to see which weeks are likely to be full.

What are the school dates?

The 2026 school session started on 11 January for Group A (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu) and 12 January for Group B, and ends on 31 December 2026 [1]. The September break was reported as 28 August to 5 September for Group A and 29 August to 6 September for Group B, with Hari Malaysia on 16 September 2026 [2].

For 2027, an aggregator reports the breaks below. The figures are not verified against the official circular, and the aggregator pages were inconsistent [3].

All figures come from the same aggregator [3]. Check the ministry calendar before you commit money.

How does each break change island demand?

Longer breaks mean more families travelling for more nights, so rooms and boat seats sell sooner. A short March break often means short stays that cluster on a few check-in days. We have no verified occupancy data, so we describe the pattern and leave the numbers to the resort.

BreakLikely effectWhat to ask
MarchShort stays, busy check-in daysIs there a minimum stay
Mid-yearLong stays, many familiesWhich weeks carry a peak rate
August-SeptemberMedium stays, often joined to a public holidayIs the long weekend priced separately
Year-endHeaviest demand, but see the monsoonIs the island open at all

Why does the year-end break need extra care?

Because it falls in the monsoon months. The northeast monsoon is described as roughly October to March, and most east-coast resorts close [4]. So the break that gives families the most days is also the break when many east-coast islands are not open.

That is not a reason to give up. West-coast and Sabah islands follow other calendars, so read mid-year versus year-end holidays and which islands open. The cost question is covered in peak-season surcharges on island packages.

In what order should you book?

  1. Confirm your children’s school dates in the official calendar.
  2. Choose an island that is open on those dates.
  3. Ask the resort which days are peak and what the surcharge is.
  4. Ask for refund and rebooking terms in writing.
  5. Book as soon as those answers are clear, since popular weeks go first.

Then read how early to book for school holidays for timing, and test your budget with the island trip cost calculator.

A better fit if…

Booking around a school break suits you if your dates are fixed and you are ready to decide early. It is a poorer fit if you have flexible leave, since weekdays outside the breaks can be quieter. In that case, read flexible-date strategies for peak periods.

Tell us your children's school state and the break you hope to use, and we will help you ask the resort which days are peak and what surcharge applies.

Common questions

Which school breaks fill the islands first?

The mid-year break and the year-end break usually draw the most families, because they are the longest. The shorter March and August-September breaks also create busy weeks. We have no verified occupancy figures, so ask the resort which of your dates it treats as peak and whether a surcharge applies.

Are the 2027 break dates certain?

No. The 2027 dates here come from an aggregator and are not verified against the official ministry circular. Aggregator pages were also inconsistent. Treat them as a planning guide, and check the ministry's published calendar before you pay a non-refundable deposit.

Why do Group A and Group B matter for islands?

The two groups of states break about one day apart, so their families can arrive in overlapping waves. Terengganu and Kelantan are in Group A, so local families may travel a day earlier than those from Group B states. Ask the resort whether your date is a peak check-in day.

Should I book before the calendar is confirmed?

You can hold a room with flexible terms, but avoid a non-refundable deposit until the dates are confirmed. Ask for the rebooking and refund terms in writing. If the resort does not release rooms yet, ask when it will and whether it can note your interest.
