Tanjung Gemok or Mersing for Tioman?

You can reach Tioman from two jetties and want to pick the one that suits where you start.

Tioman has two jetties in our research. Mersing is in Johor and Tanjung Gemok is in Rompin, Pahang, and ferries from both are run by Bluewater Express and Cataferry, with tickets best bought in advance [1]. Your starting point should decide, because the island you reach is the same.

Research does not confirm the crossing time from either jetty, so this page helps you choose by the day you will have. It sits beside the Pulau Tioman guide and the plain comparison on Mersing versus Tanjung Gemok departures.

The two fare listings come from a single dated guide, so ask for a written fare before you rely on them.

How does your starting point decide?

Work out the drive to each jetty from your door, then add the time the operator asks you to arrive. The jetty with the shorter total drive and the better boat time is the better jetty for you.

From the south, our pages on Johor Bahru to Mersing and Singapore to Mersing help. If you start from Singapore and want to consider the other jetty, read Singapore to Tanjung Gemok.

From the north or centre, see Kuala Lumpur to Mersing and Kuantan to Mersing. Compare the drive and the morning boat time side by side.

What does a worked comparison look like?

Imagine two plans for the same day. Plan one drives a short distance to one jetty and takes a boat that leaves mid-morning. Plan two drives longer to the other but catches an earlier boat.

The earlier boat gives you more island time only if the extra driving does not mean a very early start. Count the hours from leaving home to dropping your bag in your room. Choose the plan with the lowest total, not the lowest drive.

Does the jetty change the village you reach?

Not by itself. Which village your ferry serves depends on the operator and the booking, not on the state the jetty is in. Ask which landing your ticket uses and how you reach your village from it.

Our guide on Mersing jetty to Tioman, arriving at Tekek and other villages explains the last leg.

What should you ask the operator?

  • What time does the ferry leave from this jetty on my date?
  • How long is the crossing, and where does it land?
  • What is the fare for adults, children and seniors?
  • Where do I park, and for how many days?
  • What is the rule if the sea is too rough?
  • Can the ticket be used at the other jetty?

A better fit if…

Mersing may be a better fit if the Johor road is your natural route, for example from Johor Bahru or Singapore.

Tanjung Gemok may be a better fit if you come from the Pahang side. Neither is better in itself. Choose the one that gives you the easier day, then confirm with the operator.

Tell us where you start and what time you want to reach the island, and we will help you compare both jetties on the same day with the same questions for the operator.

Common questions

Which jetty is closer to Tioman, Mersing or Tanjung Gemok?

Research does not confirm the crossing time from either jetty, so we cannot say. Both are served by Bluewater Express and Cataferry. Choose by where you start, then ask the operator for each crossing time on your date.

Is one jetty cheaper?

One guide lists the same fares from both jetties, but it is low confidence and dated. Ask for a written fare for your date, including child and senior rates, and confirm any fee paid at the counter.

Which state is each jetty in?

Mersing is in Johor and Tanjung Gemok is in Rompin, Pahang. That affects the road you drive, not the island you reach. Check the drive from your own starting point.

Can I leave from one jetty and return to the other?

It may be possible, but it adds complications such as where your car is parked. Ask the operator whether a ticket can be used at either jetty, and plan how you collect the car.
