Public holidays that sell out islands
You want to know which public holidays to book early, and which ones fall when islands close.
Public holidays that join a weekend or a school break, and that fall while the island is open, are the ones most likely to fill rooms. We have no verified sales data, so we cannot rank them for you. What we can do is show you the reported 2027 dates, flag which ones fall in the monsoon, and give you the questions to ask before you pay.
For the broader date picture, start with when is the best time to visit Malaysian islands.
Which holidays are on the 2027 list?
One secondary summary of the Cabinet schedule lists Chinese New Year on 6 and 7 February, Hari Raya Aidilfitri on 10 and 11 March, and Hari Raya Haji on 17 May, with 18 May in Kelantan and Terengganu [1]. These religious dates depend on moon-sighting, so confirm them with the official gazette before you commit money [1].
For 2026, Hari Malaysia is on 16 September [2]. The September school break is reported as 28 August to 5 September for Group A and 29 August to 6 September for Group B, so the public holiday can join a school break [2].
Which of these fall when the east coast is open?
The northeast monsoon is described as roughly October to March, and most east-coast resorts close then [3]. That changes how you read each holiday.
| Holiday | Reported date | East coast likely open? | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year 2027 | 6 to 7 February | Usually in the closed season | Read the dedicated guide |
| Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2027 | 10 to 11 March | At the edge of the season | Ask for opening dates |
| Hari Raya Haji 2027 | 17 May (18 May in two states) | In the open season | Likely busy, book early |
| Hari Malaysia 2026 | 16 September | In the open season | May join a school break |
The “likely” in that table is our reading of the monsoon dates, not a promise. Ask each resort whether it is open on your exact dates.
Why does a holiday sell out so fast?
Because demand and supply move in opposite directions. On a holiday weekend, more families want the same few rooms and boat seats, and small islands have a fixed number of both. A resort with 40 rooms cannot add a 41st.
Boats also have limits. Our guide on long weekends on islands: crowd levels and queues explains the jetty side, and peak-season surcharges explains the price lines.
How do you book a holiday that might move?
- Ask whether the holiday date is confirmed or still depends on the moon.
- Choose flexible terms until the date is official.
- Ask whether the rate and minimum stay are fixed or may change.
- Ask what happens if the holiday shifts by a day.
- Keep your return flight changeable if you can.
For timing, read how early to book for school holidays, which applies to public holidays too.
What if the holiday you want is sold out?
Do not panic. Try the days either side, a midweek stay, or a different island. Our guide on flexible-date strategies for peak periods lists options, and choosing a backup when your preferred island is unavailable helps when the island itself is full.
A better fit if…
Booking a holiday week suits you if your leave is fixed and you are ready to decide early. It is a poorer fit if you want low prices and quiet beaches, since holidays often bring both higher rates and more crowds. In that case, a midweek date outside the holiday may suit you better.
Common questions
Which public holiday sells out islands fastest?
We have no verified sales data, so we cannot rank them. The holidays most likely to fill rooms are the ones that join a weekend or a school break and fall while the island is open. Ask the resort which of your dates it already treats as peak.
Are the 2027 holiday dates fixed?
Not all of them. One summary of the Cabinet schedule lists Chinese New Year on 6 and 7 February, Hari Raya Aidilfitri on 10 and 11 March and Hari Raya Haji on 17 May, with 18 May in Kelantan and Terengganu. Moon-sighting can move religious dates, so confirm with the official gazette.
Should I wait for the exact holiday date before booking?
You can hold a room with flexible terms while you wait, but avoid a non-refundable deposit until the date is confirmed. Ask the resort in writing what happens if the holiday moves by a day, and whether your booking can shift with it.
Does a public holiday always cost more?
Often a holiday carries a higher rate or a minimum stay, but this varies by resort and we cannot quote a number. Ask for the rate on your exact dates, and compare it with the nights either side. Our surcharge guide explains the lines to look for.
