Mid-year or year-end holiday: which island opens?

You have two school breaks to choose from and want to know which islands are open in each.

The mid-year break is the easier one for east-coast islands, because it falls outside the northeast monsoon. The year-end break starts in early December, when most east-coast resorts are closed, so you will need to look at islands that follow other calendars. Neither is simply better. Each suits a different coast.

For the wider date question, start with when is the best time to visit Malaysian islands.

What are the two breaks in 2027?

An aggregator reports the 2027 mid-year break as 21 May to 5 June for Group A and 22 May to 6 June for Group B, and the year-end break as starting on 3 December for Group A and 4 December for Group B [1]. These dates are not verified against the ministry circular, and the aggregator pages were inconsistent [1].

Check the ministry’s published calendar before you pay a non-refundable deposit. The one-day offset between groups may matter when a resort has few rooms left.

How do the two breaks compare?

The northeast monsoon is described as roughly October to March, and most east-coast resorts close and ferries are restricted [2]. That sorts the two breaks quickly.

The table is our reading of the monsoon dates, not a promise. Always ask the resort.

What changes with the Koh Lipe ferry?

The direct ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe is seasonal. Sources say it runs from mid or late October to the end of May, with no direct service from June to September, and operators should confirm the start of the 2026-27 season [3].

That gives the opposite pattern to the east coast. A year-end trip may find the direct ferry running, while a mid-year trip that extends into June may not. The window straddles the end of May, so the dates matter. See our guide on Koh Lipe via Langkawi.

What about west-coast and Sabah islands?

Pangkor, for example, keeps a short crossing from Lumut Jetty, reported at about 30 to 45 minutes depending on sea conditions [4]. That makes it a common alternative in the closed east-coast months, though a rough day can still pause boats. Read Pangkor’s season and west-coast islands when the east coast is closed.

For Sabah, see Sabah islands: seasons and permits. We have no verified month table for Sabah, so ask the operator.

How do you choose?

  1. Decide which break your children’s school gives you.
  2. Choose a coast that is open in that window.
  3. Ask each resort for its season dates and peak days in writing.
  4. Ask what happens if a boat cannot sail.
  5. Compare two written quotations with the island trip cost calculator.

A better fit if…

The mid-year break suits you if you want an east-coast island such as Redang or Perhentian. The year-end break suits you if you are happy to explore a west-coast island, Sabah or a seasonal route and accept more planning. If you have no preference, the mid-year break carries less closure risk for the east coast.

Tell us which break you can use and which coast you prefer, and we will help you ask resorts that are open in that window for their dates and rates.

Common questions

Which break is better for east-coast islands?

The mid-year break, because it falls outside the northeast monsoon window, which is described as roughly October to March. The year-end break starts in early December, when most east-coast resorts are closed. Confirm each resort's own dates, as they vary by year.

Can I still travel to an island in the year-end break?

Possibly, if you choose islands that follow a different calendar, such as west-coast or Sabah islands, or a seasonal route that runs at that time. We cannot confirm any resort for your dates, so ask each one in writing before paying.

Are the 2027 break dates certain?

No. They come from an aggregator and are not verified against the official ministry circular. Group A and Group B also differ by about a day. Treat them as a planning guide and check the ministry calendar before a non-refundable deposit.

Which break is busier?

We have no verified occupancy figures to rank them. The year-end break is the longest, so it can be heavily demanded on any island that is open. Ask the resort which of your dates carry peak rates and minimum stays.
