Perhentian Besar or Kecil: where to base?
You know you want Perhentian and need to decide which island fits the way you like to stay.
Perhentian Besar suits you if you want a calmer base with a mix of chalets and resorts. Perhentian Kecil suits you if you like more places to eat and meet people. Both take a speedboat of about 40 minutes from Kuala Besut [2], so the boat rarely decides it.
Your bay matters more than your island. Our hub guide on how to choose a beach and base on an island sets out the wider method, and the Perhentian Besar island guide lists its areas.
How do the two islands compare?
The table uses confirmed figures only. Where we have no confirmed answer, it says to ask.
| Perhentian Besar | Perhentian Kecil | |
|---|---|---|
| Departure | Kuala Besut jetty | Kuala Besut jetty |
| Boat time | About 40 minutes [2] | About 35 to 45 minutes [2] |
| Areas | Tuna Bay, Abdul’s Beach, Teluk Pauh, Flora Bay [1] | Long Beach, Coral Bay, fishing village |
| Typical feel | Ask each place | Ask each place |
| Monsoon | Most places close, November to February [5] | Most places close, a daily boat serves the fishing village |
Whichever island you choose, confirm the exact bay before you pay.
Which areas are on Perhentian Besar?
Besar has Tuna Bay, Abdul’s Beach, Teluk Pauh and Flora Bay [1]. Perhentian Island Resort sits at Teluk Pauh and runs its own boat transfers [4].
Cozy Chalet is at the north end of Tuna Bay, where a jungle path starts toward Teluk Pauh. Coral View Island Resort is south of Teluk Pauh on a rocky peninsula. Ask any place how it connects to the next bay, and whether the path is safe at night.
Which areas are on Perhentian Kecil?
Kecil has Long Beach, Coral Bay and a fishing village. One blog places Ombak Resort at Coral Bay, a walk from Long Beach.
Long Beach is the name usually linked with the livelier side, while Coral Bay is where many people look for something calmer. Treat that as a starting point and ask each place what is around it after dark.
How do you decide between them?
Answer these in order:
- Do you want to walk to plenty of places to eat, or stay near your resort?
- How long a walk from the sand to your room can everyone manage?
- Does anyone need a gentle shore entry or a ramp?
- Do you want to wake up to quiet, or does a little music suit your group?
Your answers point to a bay, and the bay points to an island.
Can you split a stay between both islands?
Yes. A taxi boat links Besar and Kecil, and one blogger put the fare at about RM20 from Besar to Kecil [3]. That figure is low-confidence, so ask for the current price.
A split stay can give you one quiet night and one social night. It adds a packing day, so it works best with three or more nights. Our guide on splitting a stay between Perhentian Besar and Kecil covers the details.
What fees and dates should you check?
The marine park fee is reported as RM30 adult and RM15 child without a MyKad, and RM5 and RM2 with one [6]. A Besut council charge of an extra RM5 per visitor was reported in 2022, and its current status is unknown [6].
Fee amounts come from secondary sources, so confirm them with the operator.
A better fit if…
Besar may be a better fit if:
- you want a calmer evening and a choice of chalets and resorts.
- you travel with young children or older relatives.
Kecil may be a better fit if:
- you want plenty of places to eat and meet people within a short walk.
- you do not mind some evening music.
What should you ask before you book?
- Which bay exactly, and how far is the sand from my room?
- Is there music, a bar or a generator nearby?
- Is the boat transfer included, and where does it land?
- What is the monsoon closing date this year?
Use the island shortlist matcher if you are still choosing between islands.
Common questions
Is Perhentian Besar quieter than Kecil?
Many travellers describe Besar as the calmer island and Kecil as the more social one, but the answer depends on the bay. Ask each place about nearby music, bars and the walk to the sand, then judge from the answers rather than the island name.
Can I stay on one island and visit the other?
Yes, a taxi boat links the two islands, and a blogger figure puts the fare at about RM20 from Besar to Kecil. It is low-confidence, so ask the resort for the current price and the hours it runs. A clear written reply is a good sign, and a vague one is a reason to ask again.
Which island suits a first-time family?
It depends on the bay you choose and the room you book. Families often want a gentle shore entry, shade and a place to eat nearby. Ask each place about those three points and about child rules before you pick an island.
Do both islands close in the monsoon?
Yes, heavy monsoon from November to February closes most places, and a daily boat still serves the Kecil fishing village. Exact dates vary by resort and year, so ask for them in writing. If anything is unclear, send us the message and we will help you read it.
