Older vs newly renovated resorts: how to tell

You are looking at photos and cannot tell if a resort is tired or simply well loved.

An older resort can be a very good stay, and a newly renovated one can still disappoint. The only way to tell is to ask about the exact room you will sleep in: when it was last renovated, what changed, and how recent the photos are. Treat the word new as a question, not an answer.

This guide helps you read the signs before you pay. It belongs to the wider decision in our hub guide on how to choose an island resort, and it links to our guide on how old the reviews are.

What does each kind of resort offer?

Older and newly renovated resorts each give you something real. This table shows the trade, and each row is a question you can send.

Older resortNewly renovated resort
PositionOften a good spot on the beach, chosen earlyDepends on the site, renovation does not move a building
RoomsMay show wear, ask about air conditioning and hot waterFresh finish, ask what was actually replaced
AtmosphereSettled, with mature trees and shadeCleaner look, may still be settling in
PriceAsk, since age alone does not set priceAsk, since the new look may be priced in
RiskTired fittings in some roomsPhotos that show the best room, not yours

The practical point: age tells you little. The condition of your exact room and the honesty of the photos tell you more.

What do real pages show us about dated information?

Two examples from our research show what to look for. Hard Rock Hotel Penang shows a renovation notice for its rooms from March 2026, and the page does not list room categories [1]. The notice tells you the rooms are changing, but it does not tell you which rooms are finished on your dates.

Pom Pom Island Resort has a site that lists a Beach and Garden Villa and a Water Villa, and the content looks dated to 2018 in a directory [2]. Whether the resort is operating now is unconfirmed.

If a page looks old, ask the resort directly whether it is open on your dates, and treat the page as history until it answers. You can read our resort notes on Hard Rock Hotel Penang.

How can you check a room’s real condition?

Ask these questions about the exact room category, not the resort in general:

  • When was this room last renovated, and what was replaced?
  • Does it have air conditioning, and what are its running hours?
  • Is hot water available, and at what times?
  • Is there a recent photo of this room, taken this year?
  • Is any work planned near the room on my dates?
  • Are recent guest photos available to compare with yours?

Write the answers down next to the date you received them. A clear answer names a year and a part, such as bathroom, roof or wiring.

A better fit if…

An older resort may be a better fit if:

  • the position or the setting matters more than a new finish.
  • you are comfortable with simple rooms and ask about air conditioning first.
  • the written answers about the room are clear and recent.

A newly renovated resort may be a better fit if:

  • you are travelling with babies, older parents or someone sensitive to damp.
  • you want fewer small surprises on a first trip.
  • the resort can show the renovated room you will actually occupy.

What is the next step?

Choose two resorts and send each the same list. If the answers are slow or vague, that is also information. When you hold two quotations, our resort inclusion comparator helps you line up what each includes.

Send us the resort names you are comparing and your dates, and we will help you ask each one the same questions about room condition, renovation and photo dates.

Common questions

Is an older island resort a bad choice?

Not necessarily. An older resort can have a better position, mature shade and a settled routine. What matters is the condition of the exact room, such as the air conditioning, hot water and bathroom. Ask when that room was last renovated and what was replaced.

What does renovated mean on a resort page?

It can mean new paint and furniture, or new plumbing and wiring, and the word alone does not say which. Ask what was changed, in which year, and whether it covered the room you will stay in. Ask for a recent photo of that room.

How can I tell if photos are out of date?

Check the date on the page or gallery, look for matching details in recent guest photos and compare the room name in the photo with the room you booked. If the photos look much better than recent guest photos, ask for new ones taken this year.

Should I choose a newly renovated resort for a first trip?

It can lower the number of surprises, but it does not remove them. A new room still depends on the boat, the meals and the season. Choose by the questions you can get answered in writing, not by the word new.
