How old are the reviews? Checking resort information
You are reading glowing reviews and wondering if they still describe the resort today.
A review is only as useful as it is recent. Check the date first, then ask whether anything has changed since: the operator, the rooms, the fees or the season. Information about island resorts ages at different speeds, so give each kind a shelf life instead of trusting everything equally.
This guide pairs with our hub guide on how to choose an island resort and our guide on reading star ratings and guest scores. Together they help you decide how much weight any page deserves.
How fast does each kind of information age?
Some details barely change, and others change every season. This table gives a rough shelf life, and the last column says what to do.
| Kind of information | How quickly it ages | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Reviews of the resort | Fast, especially after a renovation or change of operator | Read the date, and prefer the same season as your trip |
| Room photos | Medium, changes with renovation | Ask for a photo of your room taken this year |
| Fees and charges | Can change at any time | Ask for the current amount in writing |
| Season dates | Reset every year | Ask for this year’s dates |
| Boat times | Vary by season and operator | Ask who confirms the time |
| Rules and policies | Slow, but they do change | Ask for the current policy |
The practical point: old reviews tell you about the past. Only the resort can tell you about your dates.
What do real examples show?
Hard Rock Hotel Penang shows a rooms renovation notice from March 2026, and its page does not list room categories [1]. Reviews written before a renovation may describe a different room. Pom Pom Island Resort has a site that looks dated to 2018 in a directory, with current operation unconfirmed [2].
Seasons shift too. MetMalaysia announced the 2025/26 northeast monsoon to begin on 13 November 2025 and run to March 2026 [3]. Our research did not find the 2026/27 start, because MetMalaysia announces only days ahead [3].
For fees, Besut district council was reported in 2022 to charge an extra RM5 per visitor on top of the fisheries fee, and its current status is unknown [4]. Last year’s news is not this year’s price.
How do you ask a resort to refresh old information?
Send a short message that quotes the detail and asks one question. Use this script:
- “I read that [detail] on [page or review], dated [date].”
- “Is that still true for [your dates]?”
- “If it has changed, what is the current detail?”
- “Could you confirm in writing, and tell me the date of your reply?”
Keep the reply with its date. If the answer differs from the page, trust the resort’s written reply and note the page as out of date.
How do you read reviews with age in mind?
Read in three passes. First, sort by newest and read the latest few.
Second, look for reviews from the same month as your trip. Third, look for repeated themes, not one-off complaints or praise.
If recent reviews mention the same issue, such as the boat or the meals, that is worth a question to the resort. If a single review is much older than the rest, treat it as history. Our guide on meal quality reviews goes deeper on one common theme.
A better fit if…
Relying on recent reviews may be a better fit if:
- the resort has changed hands or been renovated.
- you are travelling in the same season as the review.
- several reviews say the same thing.
Relying on the resort’s written reply may be a better fit if:
- the reviews are old or very few.
- the detail is a fee, a date or a rule.
- you can get the reply with a date on it.
What is the next step?
Pick the three details that matter most to your trip, such as the room, the boat and the fee. Find the newest source for each, and ask the resort to confirm them for your dates. Our resort inclusion comparator can hold the replies side by side.
Common questions
How recent should a review be?
As recent as you can find, and ideally from the same season as your trip. A review from before a renovation or a change of operator may describe a different place. Look at the date first, then at whether the details still match the resort today.
Do reviews from the monsoon season help?
They can help with rough-sea and closure questions, but they may not describe the open season. Check the review date and the month. Many east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, so the experience differs between seasons.
Are fees in old articles still correct?
Treat them as a hint, not a price. Fees can change, and a charge reported in 2022 may no longer apply. Ask the operator for the current amount in writing before you budget.
What should I ask a resort about old information?
Quote the detail and its source, and ask whether it is still true for your dates. For example, ask whether the room photo is current, whether the fee is included and whether the season dates are confirmed. A direct question gets a direct answer.
