Official resort sites vs agency pages: which to trust

The resort's page says one thing, an agency says another, and you are unsure which to believe.

An official resort site is the best place to read about rooms, facilities and house rules. An agency page is often the best place to see a priced package with transfers.

Neither is automatically right. The safest habit is to use both for ideas and confirm each detail that affects your trip with the resort in writing.

The question is not which page is better but whose responsibility the information is, and how recent it is. Our hub guide on how to choose an island resort places this in the wider decision, and our guide on how old the reviews are covers freshness in more depth.

What is each type of page good for?

Each source answers some questions well and others badly. This table shows where to lean on each.

Official resort siteAgency or operator pageAggregator or directory
Rooms and facilitiesBest sourceSummary onlyOften a summary, may be old

The practical point: use each for what it does best, then ask the resort to confirm anything that matters.

What do real cases from our research show?

Our research shows several limits. A Pom Pom Island Resort site lists a Beach and Garden Villa and a Water Villa, yet it looks dated to 2018 in a directory [1]. Whether it is operating now is unconfirmed.

An aggregator describes the Four Seasons Resort Langkawi as having Malayan-style pavilions with an adult-only pool and spa [2]. The official site returned an error, so we could not verify it.

For Mabul, an operator page describes the road and boat route from Tawau airport to the resort, and notes that the Semporna jetty fee is not included in some packages [3]. That level of detail is useful, and the operator is the right one to ask about its own package. For several resorts we could not find a working official site at all, so we say what we could confirm and no more.

How do you confirm a detail in writing?

Use these five steps for any detail that matters:

  1. Note the source, the page address and the date you read it.
  2. Write one clear question to the resort, quoting the detail.
  3. Ask the agency which resort page its detail comes from.
  4. Keep both replies, with their dates, in one place.
  5. If the replies differ, follow the resort’s written word and ask the agency to correct its page.

A confirmed reply in writing is worth more than any page.

How do you check a booking company is licensed?

A booking or tour company should be licensed. Sabah Tourism and Bernama point travellers to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) online check, where you can search by company name or licence number [4]. The address returned an error when we tested it, so find the current link on the MOTAC site first.

Ask the company for its licence number before you pay. If it will not say, that is a signal to wait. For a wider view of protection, see our notes on government-linked vs private resorts.

A better fit if…

Starting from the official site may be a better fit if:

  • you want to read room types, facilities and rules first.
  • you plan to book directly with the resort.
  • the site shows a recent date and working links.

Starting from an agency page may be a better fit if:

  • you want a package with transfers and fees explained together.
  • the resort page is thin or out of date.
  • the agency names its licence and the resort it works with.

What is the next step?

Choose one detail that matters, such as the boat transfer, and send it to both the resort and the agency. Compare the answers in the resort inclusion comparator, and keep the resort’s written reply as your reference.

Send us the pages you are comparing and the detail you want to confirm, and we will help you write one clear message to the resort and one to the agency.

Common questions

Is an official resort site always right?

It is the best starting point for rooms, facilities and policies, but it can be out of date or silent on details such as meals and transfers. Check the date, then confirm anything that matters to your booking in writing.

Are agency pages less reliable?

Not necessarily. An agency may list a package with transfers and fees that the resort page leaves out. The difference is who is responsible for the information, so ask the agency which resort page its details come from.

How do I tell if a page is out of date?

Look for a date, a copyright year, recent photos, working links and a current booking system. Compare details with recent guest photos. If the page looks old, ask the resort whether it is open and whether the details still apply.

How do I check a booking company is licensed?

Sabah Tourism points travellers to a MOTAC online check by company name or licence number. The address we tested returned an error, so find the current link on the MOTAC site. Ask the company for its licence number and check it there.
