Mataking or Pom Pom for snorkelling variety?

Snorkelling is the point, and you want to compare how each island gets you in the water.

We cannot rate the snorkelling itself at either island, because the sources we hold describe access and stays, not reefs. What we can do is compare how you get there and what the resort pages confirm, then give you the questions that reveal the snorkel format. Read the answers, not the photos.

Mataking is about an hour by speedboat from Semporna. Pom Pom is reported at a van of about an hour plus a boat of about 45 minutes. Our Pulau Mataking guide and Pulau Pom Pom guide cover the islands, and the resort inclusion comparator helps you line up two quotations.

How does access compare?

Mataking is reported at about an hour by speedboat from Semporna [1]. The resort states a return shared boat from Semporna jetty is included [2].

Pom Pom is reported at a van of roughly an hour from Tawau or the jetty, then a speedboat of about 45 minutes [3]. Both are low-confidence sources, so confirm with the resort.

Full board means your main meals are included (check exactly which ones).

Because the snorkel row is empty for both, it matters most.

What is the snorkel format, and why does it decide variety?

Variety comes from how many different places you swim and for how long. On a small island, that can mean a house reef you swim from, boat trips to other spots, or both.

Ask each resort which of these you get, how many outings are included in the price, and whether the boat takes you on set days. If a resort says “snorkel included”, ask for the number of trips and the length of each.

A better fit if…

Mataking may be a better fit if:

  • you want full board and a shared boat stated on the resort’s own site.
  • you prefer to compare written inclusions before booking.

Pom Pom may be a better fit if:

  • an operator gives you a current, written plan and confirms it is operating.
  • you want a smaller island and have time to verify.

What should you ask both resorts?

  • Is there a house reef, boat trips, or both, and how many trips are included?
  • How long is each outing, and how many people share a boat?
  • Are gear, life jackets and a guide included?
  • What happens on a day when the sea is too rough to go out?
  • Is the Semporna jetty fee in the price?

For a wider look at the format, read our guide on Semporna snorkel inclusions and compare answers line by line.

Tell us how many days you have for snorkelling and who in the group is a confident swimmer, and we will help you ask both islands about format, gear and guides.

Common questions

Which island has better snorkelling?

The sources we hold do not rate the snorkelling at either island, so we will not pick a winner. Compare the format instead: house reef or boat trips, number of stops, guide, gear and timing. Ask each resort what you see on a typical snorkel stop and how many outings are included.

Is snorkel gear included?

Neither source we hold says. Mataking Island Resort states full board and a return shared boat, not gear. Ask both whether masks, snorkels and fins are included, how they fit children, and whether guided snorkel trips cost extra. Write the answer next to the quotation.

Which is easier to reach for a snorkelling weekend?

The legs are close: about an hour by boat from Semporna to Mataking, and a van of about an hour then a boat of about 45 minutes to Pom Pom, both from low-confidence sources. A weekend leaves little water time after travel, so plan at least three nights.

Can non-swimmers snorkel?

Sometimes, with a life jacket and a guide staying close. Ask each resort what supervision and floatation they provide and what a non-swimmer can do while the group snorkels. A calm answer with specifics is a good sign.
