Redang or Tenggol: snorkelling or diving trip

You want time in the water and need to know which island is built for what you do.

Tenggol is a dive-focused island, and Redang is a resort island with a marine park. If your group snorkels, Redang is the more natural fit.

If you dive, or your group is mixed, Tenggol deserves a look. Ask what each island offers for the level of water time you want.

Read our Pulau Redang guide and Pulau Tenggol guide for more. If you stay with snorkelling, our guide on Redang marine park snorkelling and the park structure is a good next read.

How do the two islands compare side by side?

The table uses figures from the research we checked. Gaps are marked as questions.

What does a dive-focused island mean for a snorkeller?

It means the services are shaped around divers. Boats, schedules and staff may focus on dive groups, and a snorkel outing may fit around them.

That is not a problem. It is a reason to ask.

Ask these questions:

  • Do you run snorkel trips, and how often?
  • Can I snorkel from the beach, or only from a boat?
  • Is equipment included or hired?
  • What happens on a day when sea conditions stop the boats?

Our guide to Tenggol snorkelling when the island is dive-led goes further.

How does the journey differ?

Redang’s crossing from Merang is about 45 minutes [1]. Tenggol’s from Dungun is 30 to 45 minutes, but Dungun is about 100 km from Kuala Terengganu airport, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours [5].

For the Tenggol road leg, read Kuala Lumpur to Dungun jetty for Tenggol and what to confirm at Dungun jetty. For Redang, see how arrival works at Merang jetty.

What do dive packages include?

An older listing says Tenggol dive packages include the boat transfer from Dungun [6]. Ask whether this is still true, and whether equipment, meals and a number of dives are in the price. Compare that with a Redang resort package, where meals and a snorkel trip may sit in one price.

A better fit if…

Redang may be a better fit if:

  • your group snorkels and wants a resort around it.
  • you want a mix of beach time and boat trips.

Tenggol may be a better fit if:

  • someone in the group dives and wants many sites.
  • you are happy with a longer road to the jetty.

When in doubt, total both with the island trip cost calculator.

Tell us whether your group snorkels, dives or both, and where you start from, and we will help you ask Redang and Tenggol the same questions.

Common questions

Is Tenggol suitable if I only snorkel?

Tenggol is described as a dive-focused island, so its services lean toward divers. A snorkeller may still enjoy it, but ask what is offered for snorkellers, who guides, and whether trips run when no divers are booked. Compare that with what a Redang resort lists.

Which island is easier to reach?

Redang is about 45 minutes by speedboat from Merang. Tenggol is 30 to 45 minutes from Dungun Jetty, but Dungun is about 100 km and a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Kuala Terengganu airport. Add the road leg before comparing.

Do dive packages include the boat?

An older listing says Tenggol dive packages include the boat transfer from Dungun. Treat that as a question, because listings age. Ask whether the transfer, equipment and meals are in the price, and for how many dives.

Do both islands close for the monsoon?

Most Redang resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly October to March. We have no confirmed season for Tenggol, so ask each operator for dates in writing before paying a deposit.
