Lang Tengah snorkelling and turtle rules
You hope to see turtles at Lang Tengah and want to do it respectfully, with the right operator.
Turtles are a lovely hope for a Lang Tengah snorkel, but they are a bonus and not a promise. Choose an outing for how it is run: small groups, a clear briefing and a guide who keeps a respectful distance from wildlife. Then treat any sighting as a gift, and keep your hands and fins away from the animal.
For the island overview, see our Lang Tengah guide. This page covers outing formats, conservation manners and the questions that reveal quality.
How do you reach Lang Tengah, and when does it close?
A speedboat from Merang takes about 45 minutes, resort boats collect guests and there is no airport [1]. Our guide on Lang Tengah via Merang explains the arrival. Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Read Lang Tengah season and the monsoon pattern before you plan.
What do we know about the rules?
The Department of Fisheries states that activities damaging coral reefs and marine ecosystems are prohibited under the Fisheries Act 1985 [2]. The marine park zone reaches 2 nautical miles from the lowest tide line [2]. We have not confirmed an official text that bans touching coral or feeding fish, so we do not state those as law.
What we can do is suggest courtesy and ask you to check with the operator. Our guide on turtle nesting and beach rules for visitors and marine park conservation rules during snorkelling go deeper.
Which outing formats suit Lang Tengah?

What questions reveal quality?
Ask in writing:
- How many guests does each guide watch?
- What is the briefing on wildlife and distance?
- What does the guide do if a turtle appears nearby?
- How long is each stop, and how many stops are planned?
- What happens if the sea is rough?
A thoughtful answer is a good sign. Our guide on turtle and reef shark spotting: what packages can honestly say explains why a promise is a warning sign.
What can you do as a guest?
Small habits protect the animals.
- Keep a respectful distance and do not chase.
- Never block a turtle’s path to the surface.
- Keep fins and hands away from coral and sand.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash top.
- Follow the guide’s instructions.
A better fit if…
A small guided group or a shore start suits snorkellers who value calm and respect over distance. A longer multi-stop trip suits those who are comfortable on a boat and understand that sightings are never certain. When you are ready, tell us your dates on WhatsApp and we will help you ask the same questions of each resort.
Common questions
Will I see turtles at Lang Tengah?
No one can promise it. Sightings depend on the day, the spot and luck. A responsible operator will say so and will not chase animals for your photo. Ask what the guide does if a turtle appears, and treat any sighting as a bonus.
May I touch or chase a turtle?
Please do not. We have not confirmed an official text on touching or feeding, so ask the operator and the resort what rules they follow. As a courtesy, keep your distance, never block the animal's path and let it surface for air.
