Lang Tengah via Merang: what to know
You have heard the boat leaves from Merang and want to know how that shapes your day.
Lang Tengah boats leave from Merang Jetty, the same jetty that serves Redang [1]. The crossing is about 45 minutes by speedboat, and resort boats collect guests [2]. In practice, ask your resort for your exact boat slot, because guests for two islands gather at one place.
For the island itself, see our Lang Tengah island guide. For the Redang side of the same jetty, read the Merang jetty guide for Redang.
What does a shared jetty change for you?
It changes the questions you ask, not the road. Everyone drives to the same place, but each island has its own boats and its own resort schedules. Your slot, not the jetty, decides when you leave.
Ask these on your booking:
- Which pier do I use, and what time should I arrive?
- Is the boat at a fixed time, or does it leave when guests arrive?
- Where do I park, and what does it cost?
- Who is my contact if I am late?
How do you reach Merang?
Research links Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang by about a 30 minute taxi [3]. Add time for baggage and the queue for a taxi. Our guide to Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang jetty explains the options.
If your flight lands late, a night near the jetty can protect your boat. See overnight in Merang before Redang, which applies to Lang Tengah too.
What about the public boat?
One undated source lists a public boat from Merang [4].
From April to August it departs at 10:00 and 12:00 and returns at 08:30 and 14:00. From September to March it departs at 12:30 and returns at 14:00, and an adult pays RM40 one way [4].
This source is low confidence, so use it only to understand the pattern.
A worked arrival-day example
Suppose your flight lands at 09:30 and the old April to August times still applied.
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Land and collect bags | About 10:15 |
| Taxi to Merang, 30 minutes | About 10:45 |
| 10:00 boat | Already gone |
| 12:00 boat | Catchable, with a wait |
| Arrive at Lang Tengah, 45 minutes | About 12:45 |
If times have changed, the sum changes too. Your resort’s written boat time is what counts. Use the jetty connection planner with your own flight.
How does the return work?
The same source lists returns at 08:30 and 14:00 in the April to August period.
An 08:30 boat gets you back to Merang early, which suits a morning flight. A 14:00 boat suits an afternoon one. Plan your onward flight with a buffer, never a tight fit.
What about the season?
Lang Tengah resorts are reported to close by the end of October for the monsoon, and exact dates vary. Ask each resort for its dates in writing. If you want to combine Redang and Lang Tengah, see Redang plus Lang Tengah in one trip.
A better fit if
The Merang route may be a better fit if you are coming from Kuala Terengganu or the north and want a clear jetty. Another route may be a better fit if you prefer a very short crossing, such as Marang to Kapas. We can help you compare.
