Koh Lipe or Redang for beach quality?
You are drawn to Koh Lipe's beaches and want to know the cost in time and paperwork.
Choose Koh Lipe if the beach itself is worth a longer journey and a passport check to you. Choose Redang if you want a simpler trip to a well-known set of bays. No source we found ranks the sand or the water, so the useful comparison is what each beach asks of you to reach it.
Our page on Koh Lipe via Langkawi sets out the route, and our Pulau Redang guide covers the domestic side.
What does each beach cost you in time and paperwork?
The table below uses only figures we sourced. Where there is no figure, it says so.
| Redang | Koh Lipe | |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Not needed | Needed, with enough validity [2] |
| Last crossing | Speedboat from Merang, about 45 minutes [3] | Ferry from Langkawi, about one to one and a half hours [2] |
| Check-in time | Set by your resort or agent, ask | About 90 minutes early, counters close 45 minutes before departure [2] |
| Open season | Most resorts close roughly November to March [4] | Direct ferry roughly mid or late October to end May [1] |
| Stay allowed | Not applicable | Thai visa-free stay cut to 30 days from 15 September 2026 [6] |
The Koh Lipe steps come from a single guide and are low confidence, so confirm them with the ferry operator.
How do you compare beach quality fairly?
Ask for the same evidence from both islands. Photos taken last month tell you more than a brochure image from years ago.
- A dated photo of the beach at low tide and at high tide.
- How deep the water is a few steps out, and where children can stand.
- Where the snorkelling starts, and whether it needs a boat.
- How crowded the beach is at midday and who else lands there.
- What sits near the shore, such as moored boats, rocks or a jetty.
Redang’s largest beach is Pasir Panjang, with about half a dozen resorts along it [5]. That tells you where the resorts are, not how the water looks on your dates. For snorkelling without a paid trip, read free snorkelling from the beach vs a paid boat trip.
What do you give up for Koh Lipe?
You give up simplicity. You add a Langkawi leg, a ferry that only runs in season, a passport and a shorter permitted stay. If your leave is only a long weekend, those steps may use up the beach time.
Our guide on what changes in the planning when an island is cross-border walks through paperwork, transfers and budget. The island trip cost calculator lets you test both with your own numbers.
A better fit if…
Koh Lipe may be a better fit if:
- you have at least a few nights and a spare day around the ferry.
- everyone in the group holds a passport with enough validity.
- you enjoy planning, and want a beach holiday that feels like going abroad.
Redang may be a better fit if:
- you have a short window and want most of it on the sand.
- you travel with young children or older parents.
- you prefer one resort to arrange the boat and meals.
What should you ask before booking?
- Can you send photos of the beach from the past month, with dates?
- What is the swimming and snorkelling situation at low tide?
- Which boat, which time, and is the transfer in the quote?
- What are your closed or rough-sea dates this year, in writing?
- What is the cancellation rule if the boat does not sail?
Common questions
Is Koh Lipe's beach better than Redang's?
No source we found ranks them, and beach quality depends on the bay, the tide and the month. Compare recent dated photos from each resort, and ask about swimming depth at low tide and where the snorkelling starts. Choose on those answers, not on a general reputation.
How much extra time does Koh Lipe add?
Redang is about 45 minutes by speedboat from Merang. Koh Lipe is a crossing of about one to one and a half hours from Langkawi, and you are asked to arrive about 90 minutes early for immigration. The Langkawi leg and the passport steps come on top of your journey to Langkawi.
Can I visit Koh Lipe in the Redang off-season?
The direct ferry window runs roughly from mid or late October to the end of May, while most Redang resorts close in the northeast monsoon, roughly November to March. The windows overlap, but nobody can promise calm weather. Ask the operator for the current timetable and a written cancellation rule.
Do I need a passport for Koh Lipe but not Redang?
Yes. Koh Lipe is in Thailand, so a passport with enough validity is needed, and Thailand cut the visa-free stay to 30 days from 15 September 2026. Redang needs no passport. Check the rule again close to your travel date.
