Extra adult and extra child supplements explained
Your family is more than two in a room, and the quote shows supplements you want to understand.
An extra adult or extra child supplement is a charge for a person beyond those covered by the room rate, usually to pay for a bed, meals or transfers. What it covers depends on the resort and the package, so the first job is to find out exactly what you are paying for. The second job is to compare it with the cost of a second room.
If you are weighing the whole package, our guide to choosing an island package explains the lines, and the cost calculator adds your own numbers.
What does a supplement actually buy?
It can buy one or more of these. Ask which.
- A bed, such as a rollaway or a sofa bed, or a mattress on the floor.
- Meals for that person, in a full-board or half-board plan.
- A seat on the boat transfer.
- Use of resort facilities and activities.
Without this list you may pay a charge that covers only a mattress.
How do age bands change the price?
Many resorts set age bands for children, with different charges. Bands differ between resorts, so ask for them in writing.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What age counts as a child? | The cut-off moves a child between child and adult pricing |
| Is there an age at which a child is free? | Younger children may be free or charged only for meals |
| Does the child need a bed? | A bed costs more than sharing |
| Are meals charged by band? | Child meals may be priced separately |
Our guide to child policy supplements and age bands goes deeper, and infant fees on island packages covers babies.
How do you compare one room with two?
Use letters until you have the numbers. Let R be the room rate per night, F a family room rate, A the extra adult supplement and C the extra child supplement.
- One standard room with extras: R + A + C.
- One family room: F.
- Two rooms: 2R.
Replace the letters with your quote, then multiply by nights. Whichever is lowest and still comfortable is a fair choice. If two rooms cost only a little more, the extra space and sleep may be worth it.
Which other fees depend on age?
Beyond the room, some fees change for children. A secondary source reports a marine park fee of RM15 for children aged 6 to 12 and RM2 with MyKad, compared with higher adult rates [1]. These figures are not confirmed, so check with the operator.
Boat fares and activities may also have child prices. Ask for them line by line.
What should you ask the agency?
- What does the extra adult or child supplement include?
- What are the age bands, and what happens on the cut-off day?
- Is the extra bed a real bed, and what size?
- Are child meals included or charged?
- What is the total for a family room against two rooms?
A better fit if…
One room with extra beds may be a better fit if:
- the children are young and happy to share.
- the room has space for the extra bed.
- the budget is tight.
Two rooms or a family room may be a better fit if:
- the children are older and need their own space.
- you want better sleep for the adults.
- the supplements come close to the cost of a second room.
What is the next step?
Write down each person’s age and the supplement lines on your quote. Ask the agency to price a family room and two rooms, and compare.
Common questions
What is an extra adult supplement?
It is a charge for a third adult, or any adult beyond the number the room rate covers. It may include a bed and, depending on the package, meals and transfers. Ask exactly what the supplement covers, and whether the bed is a proper bed or a rollaway.
What is an extra child supplement?
It is a charge for a child beyond those included in the room rate. It often depends on age and on whether the child needs a bed. Ask for the age bands in writing, and ask which meals and transfers the child is charged for.
Do children pay the marine park fee?
At the time of checking, a secondary source reports a lower fee for children aged 6 to 12 than for adults, and different rates for MyKad holders and others [1]. Confirm the current amounts and who collects them.
Is it cheaper to take two rooms?
Sometimes, if the extra adult and child supplements add up to more than a second room. Ask the agency to price both options, and compare the totals with your own numbers.
