Child policy supplements: age bands and bedding
Your quote charges children by age and bed type, and you want the numbers to be fair.
A child supplement is a set of charges that follow the child’s age and bed type, not one flat fee. Four lines can apply: the bed, the meals, the boat seat and the marine park fee. Ask the agency for the age band, the bed type and the meals in writing before you compare totals.
This guide belongs to our guide to choosing an island package. For the adult side of the same question, see extra adult and extra child supplements explained.
What are the four charges that can follow a child?
A quote may combine two or more of these into one line, so ask for them separately.
| Charge | What it covers | The question |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | A mattress, cot or shared bed | Which of these is the quote offering? |
| Meals | Breakfast, lunch, dinner for the child | Which meals, and at what portion? |
| Boat seat | A seat on the transfer | Does a young child need a ticket? |
| Park fee | The marine park entry | Is it in the package or paid on arrival? |
If one charge is missing from your quote, ask whether it is included or simply forgotten.
How do age bands work?
Age bands divide children into groups, for example a toddler band, a younger-child band and an older-child band. The cut-off ages differ from one resort to another, so a child who is one price at one place can be another price elsewhere.
Ask these questions for each child:
- What is the cut-off age for each band?
- Is age counted on the travel date or the booking date?
- What happens if a birthday falls during the trip?
Keep the answer in your chat, so everyone reads the same band.
What about the marine park fee for children?
Reported rates show a child aged 6 to 12 paying RM15 without MyKad and RM2 with MyKad, compared with RM30 and RM5 for adults [1]. The source is a secondary one, so confirm the current figures with the operator.
Packages differ on whether the fee is included. Our guide on marine park fees, included or paid on arrival explains how to read the line.
Which bedding choice suits which family?
Think about how your child sleeps, not only what the quote offers.
- A baby or toddler may need a cot, and a cot may be limited in number. Ask early.
- A younger child may be happy to share your bed, if the room rules allow.
- An older child usually needs a proper bed, which is where the bed supplement matters most.
If you need more than one extra bed, check that the room can physically hold them. A family room may suit better than an extra bed squeezed in.
How do I work out a fair total with my own children?
Take a sheet and make a line for each child. Write the age on the travel date, the band, the bed type, the meal arrangement and the park fee status.
Now compare two quotes by those lines only. For a family of four, that is two adult lines and two child lines, each with five details. The comparison can show that the headline price hides a difference in bedding or meals. Our island trip cost calculator lets you test the sums.
What should I ask the agency?
- What are the age bands, and how is age counted?
- Which bed does the child supplement include?
- Are meals included for a child not using an extra bed?
- Does a young child need a boat ticket?
- Is the marine park fee in the package for children?
A better fit if…
Paying a bed supplement may suit you if your child is older and needs a proper bed. Sharing a bed or using a cot may be a better fit if your child is small and the resort allows it in writing. Our guide on infant fees on island packages covers the youngest travellers.
Common questions
How do island resorts decide a child's age band?
Each resort or agency sets its own bands, and the same child can fall into different bands at different places. Ask for the age on the travel date, not the booking date, and ask for the bands in writing. A child's birthday inside the trip can change the line.
What does a child bed supplement actually buy?
It may mean an extra bed, a mattress on the floor, a cot or simply the right to share your bed. These differ a lot, so ask which one your quote means. Also ask whether the child still receives meals if no extra bed is charged.
Do children pay the marine park fee?
Reported rates show a lower fee for children aged 6 to 12 and a lower rate again for Malaysians with MyKad. Whether your package includes it varies, so ask. Check the child's age on the travel date against the age band the fee uses.
Can I share one bed with a young child to save money?
Sometimes, if the resort allows it and the room's capacity rule is met. Ask for the sleeping arrangement in writing, because some rooms limit the number of people regardless of bed size. A written answer also protects you at check-in.
