Evening and night boat transfers: when they run
Your flight lands late and you wonder whether any boat will take you to the island tonight.
In the sources we checked, scheduled island boats stop in the late afternoon, so a late arrival usually means a night on the mainland and a morning boat. The last Perhentian speedboat from Kuala Besut is reported at about 17:00 to 17:30 [1]. If you need a boat after that, ask the resort whether a private crossing is offered, and treat it as an exception, not a given.
Our jetty connection planner helps you test your landing time against the last boat. Start there if you are still choosing flights.
When do the last boats leave?
The table shows what we found. All figures are second-hand, so confirm them for your date.
| Route | Reported timing | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Besut to Perhentian | Earliest about 07:00 to 08:00, last about 17:00 to 17:30 [1] | Medium |
| Marang to Kapas | Boats about 07:00 to 17:00 [2] | Low |
| Merang to Lang Tengah (public boat) | Sep to Mar: departs 12:30, returns 14:00; Apr to Aug has more times [3] | Low |
| Kuah to Koh Lipe (ferry) | Arrive about 90 minutes early; counters close 45 minutes before departure [4] | Low |
The result is the same on every line. The useful part of the day for boats is the morning and early afternoon, and the clock for check-in starts earlier than the boat.
Why are night crossings rare?
We did not find an official statement for the routes above, so the reason for each one is unknown to us. What you can ask is practical: how is the jetty lit, who is the crew, is the sea checked, and who is responsible if conditions change after dark?
A boat that runs in the dark must also land you in the dark, on a jetty or a beach you have not seen. That is worth asking about, especially with children or older passengers.
What should you ask if you need a late boat?
Send these questions in writing to the resort or agent:
- Is any boat offered after the last scheduled sailing, and on which jetty?
- What does it cost, and is the cost per boat or per person?
- Are life jackets and lights carried, and is the crew local to the route?
- Who meets us on the island, and where do we land?
- What happens if the sea is rough and the boat cannot go?
If the answer is a quiet no, that is useful too. You can then plan a mainland night with a clear head.
What is the safer plan if you land late?
Book a night near the jetty town and take the first morning boat. Our guides on arriving at night and waiting for a morning boat and whether you need a night in Kuala Besut before Perhentian walk through it. If you have already missed the last boat, see what to do if you miss the last boat to the island.
You can also change the flight. Our guide on checking a flight against a boat cut-off shows how to test a landing time before you pay.
A better fit if…
A mainland night is a better fit if your flight lands after midday or you are travelling with children or older family. A private late boat may be a better fit only if the resort confirms it in writing and you are comfortable with a dark landing. Either way, ask before you pay for the flight.
Common questions
Is there a boat to Perhentian at night?
The sources we checked report the last scheduled speedboat from Kuala Besut at about 17:00 to 17:30. We found no scheduled night service. If you land late, ask your resort whether a private boat is possible, what it costs and whether it is offered after dark at all.
What if my flight lands after the last boat?
Plan a night on the mainland and take the first morning boat. Ask your resort to move your check-in by a day if needed, and check the cancellation terms first. Our guides on arriving at night and on missing the last boat cover the steps.
Can a resort send a boat just for me?
Some may arrange a private charter, though it is never a given. Ask whether it is possible, the price, who the crew is, whether lifejackets and lights are carried, and who is responsible if the sea turns. Get the answer in writing.
Are boat times the same all year?
Not always. One listing for the public boat to Lang Tengah shows different times between April to August and September to March. Treat any listed time as a starting point and confirm for your date.
