Arriving at night: before a morning boat
Your flight lands late and the boat leaves early, so the hours between need a plan.
If you land at night, sleep near the jetty and book the transfer in advance. Aim to reach the jetty well before the first boat, which on the Kuala Besut route is reported at about 07:00 to 08:00 [1]. Tell the hotel about your late arrival, and the island resort about your first-boat plan.
Our guides on late flight, early boat: the overnight decision and the jetty connection planner help you decide how far from the jetty to sleep.
What is the plan, step by step?
- Book a room near the jetty town and confirm late check-in by message.
- Pre-book the road leg from the airport, with a named driver and a place to meet.
- Eat something near the hotel, or ask the hotel what is open.
- Repack into a mainland bag and a small island bag.
- Set two alarms and confirm the jetty check-in time with your resort.
- Check out early, pay any outstanding fees and head to the jetty.
The result is a morning with nothing left to decide.
What does the road leg look like?
The road after a night landing is the same distance as by day, but the choices are fewer. Reported road times are about 30 minutes from Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang [2] and about 75 minutes from Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty [3]. Ask the hotel or resort for a driver who will meet you and know the hotel.
If your airport is far from the jetty town, you may prefer to sleep near the airport and drive in the morning. Compare the extra morning road time against the hotel cost, and see airport taxi vs e-hailing for the ride options.
A sample evening you can adapt
This timeline uses assumed times, so replace each with your own. The aim is to see how the hours add up.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 21:30 | Land, collect bags |
| 22:15 | Driver meets you, road to the jetty town |
| 23:30 | Hotel check-in, light supper |
| 00:15 | Repack, set alarms, sleep |
| 06:00 | Wake, breakfast |
| 07:00 | Check out, to the jetty, check in |
Take your resort’s boat time and subtract the jetty check-in, the breakfast and the walk. That sets your alarm.
What should you ask the hotel and the resort?
- Will someone be at reception at my landing time, and do you offer a key by message?
- Is breakfast served early, or can you pack a box?
- How far is the hotel from the jetty, and can you arrange a pickup?
- What is the latest boat check-in, and where do I go?
- If my flight is delayed, can the room and the boat be held?

A better fit if…
A night stop near the jetty is a better fit if your flight lands after 21:00, you travel with children or older parents, or the boat leaves early. Sleeping at the airport or the jetty may be a better fit only if you travel alone. Read our guide on sleeping at the jetty when it is workable first.
Common questions
Should I sleep near the airport or near the jetty?
Near the jetty, if you can reach it safely at night. The first boat is the fixed point, and each minute of road you remove from the morning is a minute of sleep. Ask the hotel about late check-in and how far it is from the jetty.
How early is the first boat?
On the Kuala Besut route the earliest speedboats are reported at about 07:00 to 08:00. Check-in at the jetty comes before that. Ask your resort for your exact boat time and the latest check-in time.
What if my hotel has a front desk that closes?
Tell the hotel your landing time in advance and ask whether someone will wait for you. Get the answer in writing. A hotel that confirms late arrival by message saves you an awkward knock on a locked door.
Should I tell the island resort I am arriving at night?
Yes. Tell them your landing time and your plan to take the first boat, so they can confirm the boat, your check-in and meals. It also helps if the boat changes.
