Cost of Tioman ferry vs speedboat

You are choosing how to cross to Tioman and want the ringgit difference laid out.

The Tioman ferry has a reported fare, and the speedboat does not have a confirmed one in our research. So this guide works out the ferry for you and gives a formula to weigh any faster boat against it. The goal is to see the true price of the crossing before you compare packages.

For the island, see the Tioman island guide. For the whole trip, read the Tioman budget for two adults.

What does the ferry cost for two adults?

Ferries run from Mersing in Johor and Tanjung Gemok in Pahang, operated by Bluewater Express and Cataferry, and tickets are best bought in advance [1]. One guide lists RM60 per adult each way from both jetties, and an older listing shows RM75 from Mersing [2].

Fare per adult each wayTwo adults, both ways
RM60RM240
RM75RM300

The gap between the two reported figures is RM60 for the trip [2], so confirm which one applies. Add the marine park fee separately. It is reported at RM5 per adult for Malaysians and RM30 for non-Malaysians, with one listing reporting RM10 for Malaysians at Mersing [4].

What do we not know about the crossing?

The research did not confirm the crossing time from an operator source [3]. It also has no confirmed speedboat fare. Treat those as questions for the operator.

  • What is the departure time on my date?
  • How long is the crossing?
  • What is the fare per adult and per child, each way?
  • Is there a luggage allowance or a charge?

Our guide to shared service choices between ferry and speedboat on Tioman explains how the options differ.

How do you compare a faster boat with the ferry?

Use one subtraction. Take the extra fare per person each way, then multiply by travellers and by directions.

For two adults going both ways the multiplier is four, so a speedboat that costs a little more per person each way costs four times that extra. If the boat saves an hour each way, divide that total by the two hours each person saves to see what an hour costs you.

Is the saved time worth it? It depends on your day.

An hour may matter if it lets you catch an earlier ferry connection or avoid a night in the jetty town. It matters less if your first day is already free.

How does the choice change a package price?

A package that includes the ferry both ways carries RM240 or RM300 for two adults, if the reported figures hold [2]. A package that leaves it out looks cheaper by that amount, but you would add it back.

If one quote offers a speedboat and another a ferry, ask each to state the fare, so you can compare them line by line. Our guide on jetty fees and boat tickets included in a package lists the usual wording.

Which jetty changes the cost?

Mersing and Tanjung Gemok are both reported as departure points. The road cost to each differs. Our guide to Mersing versus Tanjung Gemok departures for Tioman compares them, and the cost of getting to Mersing from KL or Singapore adds the road leg.

What should you ask for in writing?

  1. Which jetty, which operator and what time?
  2. The fare per adult and child, each way.
  3. Whether the marine park fee is included.
  4. The luggage rule.
  5. What happens if sailings are cancelled?

A better fit if…

This breakdown suits you if you are comparing two Tioman quotes and one includes the crossing. It also suits you if you want to know whether a faster boat is worth a higher fare. For peak weekends, read Tioman peak dates and ferry availability.

Send us your dates and the jetty you prefer, and we will help you ask for the ferry or speedboat fare and times in writing.

Common questions

How much is the Tioman ferry per adult?

One guide lists RM60 per adult and RM55 per child each way from both jetties, and an older listing shows RM75 and RM60 from Mersing. The figures are dated and inconsistent. Ask the operator for the current fare for your date and jetty.

Is a speedboat cheaper than the ferry?

The research we checked has no confirmed speedboat fare, so we cannot say. Ask for the fare per person each way, the crossing time and the luggage rule. Then compare it with the ferry using the formula in this guide.

How long is the crossing?

We could not confirm the crossing time from an operator source. Ask your operator for the departure and arrival times for your date, and for the check-in time at the jetty. Plan your first and last day around those times.

Should I book the ferry in advance?

One source says tickets are best bought in advance. Ask your agent or operator when tickets can be booked and whether your package includes them. Keep the confirmation with you.
