Life jackets in snorkel tours: children's sizes

You are bringing children on a snorkel tour and want to know the life jackets will fit them.

Ask the operator for life jackets in your children’s sizes, in advance, and check the fit at the jetty before boarding. A vest that is too large can slide up, and one that is too small cannot support the child. A vest helps with buoyancy, but it does not replace an adult or guide within reach.

This guide sits inside the wider check of a family snorkelling package. For gear beyond the vest, see snorkel equipment: included or rented.

What should you ask the operator?

Ask before you book, and again on the day.

  1. Do you provide life jackets for children, and in which sizes?
  2. Can you tell me the weight range of the smallest and largest child vests?
  3. Is a vest provided for every passenger on the boat?
  4. Do you have a vest for a toddler or an infant, or should we bring our own?
  5. Who checks the fit before we enter the water?

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has advised operators to provide enough life jackets for all passengers, but we could not find the exact rule [1]. That makes your own questions the best protection.

How do you check a child’s life jacket fit?

Take one minute at the jetty. You need the child standing in front of you.

  1. Read the label for the weight range and compare it with your child’s weight.
  2. Fasten every strap and buckle, including the crotch strap if there is one.
  3. Pull the vest firmly at the shoulders. It should not rise over the chin or ears.
  4. Ask the child to raise their arms. The vest should stay put.
  5. Walk to the water’s edge with the child. If it feels loose or tight, ask for another size.

If the guide offers to fit the vest for you, accept, and still check the straps yourself.

What does a vest do, and what does it not do?

A vest keeps a person higher in the water and takes effort out of floating. That helps beginners relax. It does not make a non-swimmer safe on its own, and it does not stop a child from being frightened.

Keep a child within arm’s reach, in calm water, with a guide or adult who is comfortable in the water. Our guide on snorkel packages for non-swimmers and the one on toddlers look at this more closely.

What if the right size is not available?

Do not accept a vest that does not fit. Ask the operator for another size, a different boat or a different time. If none is possible, choose a different operator, or a calmer activity such as paddling in shallow water with an adult.

Ask also what the operator does if a child refuses to enter the water. A good operator lets them rest on the boat without pressure.

A better fit if…

A guided boat outing may suit you if your children are comfortable in a vest and the operator has the right sizes. A beach and shallow-water day may suit you better if your children are very young, nervous or between sizes. Either is a good holiday when the fit is right.

Tell us your children's ages and whether they swim, and we will help you ask the operator about sizes, supervision and the calmest outing for them.

Common questions

Are children's life jackets always provided on snorkel tours?

Do not assume so. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has advised operators to provide enough life jackets for all passengers, but we could not find the exact rule. Ask for children's sizes by name and check the fit yourself.

How do I know the size is right?

Check the label for the weight range, then test the fit. The vest should be snug, with all straps fastened, and should not slide up over the child's chin when you lift it by the shoulders.

Can my child snorkel in an adult vest?

An adult vest that is too large can ride up and be unsafe. Ask for a smaller size, and if none exists, consider a different operator or a calmer activity for the child.

Does a life jacket make a non-swimmer safe?

No. A vest helps with buoyancy but does not replace supervision. A non-swimmer needs a guide or adult within arm's reach, calm water and an operator who is comfortable with beginners.
