Semporna islands for photographers
You carry a camera and want to know what each Semporna island can realistically give you.
For a photographer, the honest answer is that Semporna islands differ most in access and stay type, and the sources we hold do not describe light. Mabul and Kapalai sit close to Sipadan, Mataking offers a range of chalets and villas, and Pom Pom has thinner, dated information. Ask each resort for direction and photos before you travel for the light.
This guide maps what can be verified and gives the questions that reveal the rest. Our Pulau Mabul guide and Pulau Mataking guide give the background, and the guide on the best time of day for island photography covers light in general.
What can each island give you on the ground?
Mabul and Kapalai are described as the closest islands to Sipadan, with several resorts and reefs [1]. A Kapalai resort website is titled as luxury overwater villas, though we could read no further detail [3].
Mataking Island Resort lists villas, beach chalets, semi-detached chalets, king chalets, deluxe garden-view rooms facing west and east, and premium rooms, with full board and a shared boat included [2]. The east and west garden-view rooms are a useful clue to ask about sunrise and sunset sides.
Full board means your main meals are included (check exactly which ones).
Pom Pom lists a Beach and Garden Villa and a Water Villa, but the site looks dated and current operation is unconfirmed [4].
How do the four compare for a photographer?
| Mabul | Kapalai | Mataking | Pom Pom | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stay type | Several resorts [1] | Overwater villas [3] | Chalets, villas, rooms [2] | Villas [4] |
| Direction clue | Ask | Ask | East and west rooms listed [2] | Ask |
| Access | Closest to Sipadan [1] | Closest to Sipadan [1] | Shared boat included [2] | Status unconfirmed [4] |
| First thing to ask | Room view at dawn and dusk | Walkway and horizon | Which side faces sunrise | That it is operating |
Why is Sipadan a permit question?
Sipadan has no accommodation since it became a marine park in 2004 and is about 45 minutes from Semporna town in calm seas [5]. Permits are booked through operators up to six months ahead [5]. If photography on Sipadan matters to you, ask the operator about camera rules and what happens if your date changes. Our guide on Semporna package inclusions explains the lines.
A better fit if…
Mataking may be a better fit if:
- you want to choose a room facing a particular direction.
- you prefer written terms on the resort’s own site.
Mabul or Kapalai may be a better fit if:
- you plan dive or underwater work near Sipadan.
- you are happy to ask for photos and direction before booking.
Pom Pom may be a better fit if:
- an operator confirms it is operating and gives a written plan.
What should you ask before you book?
- Which direction does my room face, and can you send a dawn or dusk photo?
- Are there walkways or a jetty with a clear horizon?
- Is a drone allowed, and where?
- Are there rules for cameras on boats or in the water?
- What happens to my plan if the sea is too rough to sail?
With written answers, the light stops being a guess. For more on packages built around photography, see photography packages on islands.
Common questions
Which Semporna island is best for sunrise or sunset photos?
The sources we hold do not say which side of each island faces sunrise or sunset, so we will not promise a view. Ask each resort which direction your room faces, for photos taken from the room at dawn and dusk, and whether the walkways or jetty give a clear horizon.
Can I fly a drone?
Our sources do not cover drone rules, and rules can differ between resorts and marine park areas. Ask the resort and the operator before you travel, and get the answer in writing. Do not assume a drone is allowed because you have seen photos from one.
Should I base myself at Sipadan?
You cannot. Sipadan has had no accommodation since it became a marine park in 2004, and visits are by permit booked through operators. Stay on a nearby island and ask the operator whether a permit, camera rules and dive time fit your plan.
Is Mataking or Mabul better for photography?
We cannot rank them from the sources we hold. Mataking Island Resort lists many room types, and Mabul has several resorts. The better fit is the one whose written answers about direction, access and gear rules match what you want to shoot.
