Sabah islands with toddlers: what to check first

You are planning Sabah with a little one and worry about long transfers and boarding a boat.

With a toddler, choose the Sabah island that keeps travel short and boarding simple. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park islands lie about three kilometres offshore from Kota Kinabalu and suit a day trip. Mantanani and the Semporna islands involve longer road legs and boats, which ask more from a little one.

Think in hours in transit, nap times and steps onto a boat, not in beaches. Our guide on which island suits a family with a toddler widens the picture, and the jetty connection planner tests the route you have in mind.

How long is the journey to each Sabah island?

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park lies about three kilometres offshore, so the boat is short [1]. Malaysian children aged twelve and below enter the park free [1].

Mantanani is reached from Kuala Abai or Rampayan. Sources conflict: one gives about two hours’ drive and an hour by speedboat, another about ninety minutes’ drive and half an hour by boat [2]. For Mabul, a reported route is about 75 minutes by van and 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat [3].

What should you check about boarding?

Boats and jetties are often where a toddler day goes wrong. Ask for photos of the jetty, how many steps lead down to the boat, whether someone helps lift a child and bags, and whether life jackets come in small sizes. Our guide on boarding a boat with toddlers and strollers lists more.

If a missed boat is your worry, read what changes after a missed connection with toddlers.

How can you plan around naps and meals?

Choose boat times that match the nap, not the other way round. A long road leg after lunch can work well if your toddler sleeps in the car. Ask whether the resort provides child meals or lets you bring your own, and whether there is a fridge for milk. Mataking Island Resort states full board, but you should check child portions [4].

Full board means your main meals are included (check exactly which ones).

A better fit if…

The park islands may be a better fit if:

  • your toddler struggles with long travel.
  • you can use a day trip and sleep in Kota Kinabalu.

Mantanani or the Semporna islands may be a better fit if:

  • your toddler is calm on long journeys.
  • you have enough nights that travel is a small part of the trip.
  • you can confirm boarding and child rules in writing.

What should you ask before you book?

  • What are the exact transfer times, including waits?
  • How many steps and what gap at boarding?
  • Are small life jackets provided?
  • What are the age rules, extra bed and meal rates for children?
  • What happens if the boat cannot sail?

Ask these first, and the choice usually settles itself.

Tell us your toddler's age, nap times and where you are staying, and we will help you ask each Sabah island about transfers, boarding and child rules.

Common questions

Which Sabah island is easiest with a toddler?

The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park islands, because they lie about three kilometres offshore and a day trip keeps the boat short. Mantanani and the Semporna islands involve long road legs and boats. Whatever you pick, ask for written boarding details and nap-friendly timings.

How long is the transfer to Semporna islands?

For Mabul, one operator reports about 75 minutes by van from Tawau airport and 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat. That is a long stretch for a toddler, especially with waits at the jetty. It is a low-confidence figure, so ask your resort for the exact plan.

Do resorts have child rates and kids clubs?

Mataking Island Resort separates children three to twelve and infants under three in its booking form but shows no child rates. Gaya Island Resort describes no kids club on its page. Ask each resort for age rules, extra bed policy and meal rates for children in writing.

What should I pack for the transfer?

Pack a day bag with snacks, water, a change of clothes, a hat and a sling or carrier, because strollers can be hard to use on jetties and boats. Ask the operator whether strollers are allowed on board and where luggage goes.
