Rebooking when your leave days are fixed

Your leave is approved for set days, and the island trip that filled them has just fallen through.

When your leave days are fixed, you cannot move the dates, so you change something else. Pull three levers in order: the island, the length of the stay, and the transfer. The aim is to keep your approved days and still reach a place that is open and worth the journey.

If your dates also fall in a closed season, start with when islands are open and when they are not. It saves you from rebooking into the same problem.

How many island days do your leave days really give you?

Count from the front door, not from the jetty. Leave days minus the travel on day one and the travel home on the last day is the time you actually have.

Here is a worked example. Say you have four leave days and you start far from the east coast. Day one is travel, day four is travel, and you have two full days between. If you cut the first transfer to a short boat, such as about 45 minutes from Merang to Redang [1], part of day one can become beach time.

The same trip through the Shahbandar ferry at Kuala Terengganu, about 1.5 to 2 hours [2], may leave the first afternoon thinner. Your implication: for the same leave, a shorter transfer can add a few hours of real holiday.

Which three levers should you pull?

LeverWhat you changeWhat to ask
IslandPick one that is open and close to your arrival pointWhich island has beds on my dates?
Stay lengthShorter on a farther island, fuller on a nearer oneWhat is the shortest sensible stay?
TransferA different jetty, a different boat timeIs there a morning boat that fits?

Pull them in this order. Changing the island can solve both the season and the transfer in one step.

Does the jetty change your day?

Yes. Perhentian boats leave Kuala Besut and take about 40 minutes to Besar [3], while Redang boats leave Merang. Use the jetty connection planner from your real starting point, because the road leg can be a large part of the day.

If your journey includes a flight, check the airport and timetable before you commit. A guide lists Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly into Kota Bharu, and it is undated, so confirm with each airline [4].

What about the flight or bus you already hold?

Ask your carrier about change rules first, then rebook the island, then adjust the ticket, in that order. A ticket you cannot move is a reason to choose an island with the same arrival point.

Write the questions down.

  1. Can the ticket be moved, and what is the fee?
  2. What is the last time I can change it free?
  3. If the island rebooking falls through, what happens to the ticket?

How do you ask the island side?

Send your leave dates, your starting point and your group. Say plainly: “My dates cannot move. Which islands have space and a morning boat?” Then ask for a written quotation for each option.

Read rebooking an island trip: what to have ready for the folder to send, and choosing a backup for the three-slot method.

A better fit if…

Keeping the dates and changing the island is a better fit if your leave was hard to get and the group agrees. Taking a refund is a better fit if no open island suits your group, since a poor trip costs more than a pause. A shorter stay on a nearer island is a better fit if the journey, not the beach, is what you were dreading.

Send us your leave dates, where you start from and the island that fell through, and we will count your real island days and suggest options that fit.

Common questions

What if my leave cannot move at all?

Then the dates are fixed and the island, the stay length and the transfer are what can change. Ask for the island that is open on those dates, and ask for the shortest transfer. A closer island can give you more usable days for the same leave.

How do I count real island days?

Subtract the travel on the first and last day from your leave days. A boat of 45 minutes plus the road to the jetty can use most of a morning, so the first and last days are partial. Count only the full days between arrival and departure as time to relax.

Should I rebook my flight or bus first?

Get the island and date confirmed first, then adjust the flight or bus. Ask the airline or bus company about its change rules before you decide, because a fee there changes the true cost of the switch. Never pay for a new ticket before the island booking is written down.

Can I ask for a refund instead of a new date?

If the cancellation was the operator's, you can ask which options their terms allow: new date, credit or refund. With fixed leave, a refund may be the better choice if no open island fits. Read the written terms and ask for the answer in writing.
