Private boat and room upgrades: what you get

You are offered a private boat and a better room and want to know which is worth it.

A private boat and a better room solve two different problems. The boat changes how you travel and when you leave, and the room changes where you sleep. Buy the one that fixes a real difficulty in your group, and ask for each as a separate line in the quote.

Our guide to choosing an island package puts these extras in the wider picture, and our explanation of private and shared boat transfers goes deeper on the boat side.

What does a private transfer upgrade actually change?

A shared boat leaves at the operator’s time and carries other guests. A private boat is booked for your party, so you set the departure within the limits the operator allows.

That matters most for groups that move slowly, such as three generations travelling together. It also matters when your arrival at the jetty does not match the shared timetable. It does not change the sea itself, and weather can still stop any boat, shared or private.

Is there a shared price to compare with?

A blog reported a shared speedboat ticket of RM35 one way and RM70 return on the Perhentian route, with the date unknown [1]. Treat that as a loose reference only, because fares change and a private boat is priced differently.

Ask the operator for the current shared fare on your route and the private price for the same legs. Put both on a per-person basis for your group size before you decide. Our island trip cost calculator does the maths.

What does a room upgrade change?

A room upgrade may mean a bigger room, a better view, a shorter walk to the beach, or a connecting room. It does not change the boat, the meals or the marine park fee unless the quote says so.

Ask the agency exactly what the upgrade is called in the resort’s own words. A room named “deluxe” at one resort can differ from the same word at another. Our guide on whether a room upgrade is worth it on a short stay helps you judge it.

Who benefits from each extra?

Run this short test for each person in the group.

If nobody in the group has a hard need, the money may be better spent on a meal upgrade or an extra night.

How do the boats work at the island end?

Some resorts send their own boat to collect guests. On the Lang Tengah route from Merang, a speedboat takes about 45 minutes and resort boats collect guests [2]. If your resort already collects you, ask what the private upgrade adds on top of that.

What should I ask the agency?

  • Is the boat upgrade for the trip in, the trip out or both?
  • How many people can the private boat carry, and how many bags?
  • Can I choose the departure time, and by how much?
  • What happens to the price if the weather stops the boat?
  • Is the room upgrade a different room category or only a view?

A better fit if…

A private boat may suit you if:

  • your group includes someone who walks slowly or tires easily.
  • you cannot match the shared timetable.
  • you have a lot of luggage between you.

A shared boat may be a better fit if your group is small, your arrival lines up with the timetable, and you would rather spend the difference on food or an extra night.

Tell us who is travelling, their ages and the days you are going, and we will help you work out which of the two upgrades your group would actually use.

Common questions

Is a private boat upgrade worth it for a family with grandparents?

It can be, when the shared schedule forces a long wait or a crowded seat. A private boat lets you leave at a time that suits the slowest walker and keeps the group together. Ask what the upgrade covers, how many seats you get and whether luggage space is included.

What is the difference between a room upgrade and a transfer upgrade?

A room upgrade changes where you sleep, such as size, view or distance from the beach. A transfer upgrade changes how you travel, such as a private boat instead of a shared one. They are separate charges, so ask for each as its own line in the quote.

Can I upgrade only one leg of the journey?

Sometimes, but not always. Some operators sell a private boat for the trip in, the trip out or both. Ask whether the upgrade is per leg or return, and whether the price changes if only one direction is private.

How do I compare a private quote with a shared ticket?

Convert both to a price per person for the same legs and the same group size. A shared ticket reference helps, but fares change, so ask the operator for the current figure. Our cost calculator lets you enter your own numbers.
