Private dinners on islands: questions before booking
You would like one special dinner on the island and want to know what to confirm first.
Before you book a private dinner on an island, confirm six things: the place, the price lines, the menu, your diet needs, the weather plan and the cancellation rule. A written answer to each protects the evening and your budget. This page gives you the questions and a table for comparing prices.
If you are still choosing a resort, start with what to verify when comparing resorts for honeymooners. For the wider plan, read honeymoon island choices in Malaysia.
What are the six questions?
Send these in one message, and ask for the reply in writing.
- Place: where exactly is the table, and who else is nearby?
- Price: what is the total, and what does it cover?
- Menu: what is served, and can we see it before we pay?
- Diet: can you confirm each dish suits our needs in writing?
- Weather: where does the dinner go if it rains or the sea is rough?
- Cancellation: what do we pay if we cancel or arrive late?
Practical implication: a resort that cannot answer these before you pay may not be ready to answer on the night.
How do you compare two dinner prices?
A dinner may be quoted per couple by one resort and per person by another. Put them on the same lines.
| Line | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Menu | How many courses, and which are optional? |
| Drinks | Which are included, and what is charged extra? |
| Setup | Is there a fee for the table, lights or music? |
| Service charge and tax | Inside the price or added on top? |
| Total for two | The number to compare |
Put the total into the cost calculator with the rest of the trip. For other upgrades, see meal upgrades, seafood nights and special dinners.
How do you handle diet and religious needs?
Say what you need when you first ask, and ask the resort to confirm each dish in writing. Do not rely on a quick verbal answer for allergies or for halal, vegetarian or other requirements. Our guide on special diets and medical meals explains how to ask for confirmation, not reassurance.
What is the weather plan?
Ask where the table moves, who decides and by what time. A covered alternative may feel different from the beach you pictured, so ask for photos. Ask whether you pay if the dinner moves to the restaurant, and whether you can choose another night instead.
Read weather cancellation on snorkel outings for how refund and reschedule rules are usually asked.
How does the boat change the plan?
If you arrive late, the first night may be gone. Ask for a night that follows your arrival, not the same night. If the boat is delayed, see if the boat is cancelled on the way in.
A better fit if…
A private dinner may suit you if you want one marked evening and your budget allows. A restaurant table with a good seat may suit you if you want the occasion without the cost. Read a la carte dining outside the package for what that costs.
Common questions
What should a private dinner quotation show?
The place, the date and time, what is included in the menu and drinks, whether the price is per couple or per person, and whether service charge and tax are inside. Ask for it in writing so you can compare it with other dinners.
How do we check the menu suits our diet?
Tell the resort your needs when you ask, not on the night. Ask for the menu in writing, and ask the resort to confirm each dish in writing. Do not rely on a verbal assurance for allergies, halal requirements or other medical or religious needs.
What if the weather turns?
Ask where the dinner moves if it rains or the sea is rough, and whether the table is covered. Ask who decides, how late the decision is made and whether you pay if the dinner moves. Get the answers before you book.
Can we cancel a private dinner?
Ask for the cancellation rule when you book. Dinner is often prepared in advance, and a late cancellation may be charged. If the boat is delayed and you miss the date, ask whether the dinner can move to another night.
