A Mersing island plus Johor Bahru and Singapore

You live in Johor or Singapore and want one trip that joins city and island.

Johor Bahru and Singapore are the closest big starting points for a Mersing-side island, and a Mersing night can protect your ferry. Join the city and the island as separate legs, each with its own buffer. Do not count on a same-day connection without checking the boat time first.

Start with the guide to Johor Bahru to Mersing. Our Tioman island guide explains what waits on the other side.

What are the legs of the trip?

Think in four parts:

  1. Your home or hotel to the border and then to Mersing, by road.
  2. A buffer at Mersing, either a night or a few hours.
  3. The ferry or speedboat to the island.
  4. The same legs in reverse on the way home.

If you start in Singapore, there is also a border leg. Our guide on Singapore to Mersing for Tioman explains it. Carry your passport and check current border and vehicle rules with official sources before you go.

Which boat details can we confirm?

Boat information for the Mersing side is uneven, so here is what we can and cannot say:

IslandWhat is reportedWhat to ask
TiomanFerries from Mersing and Tanjung Gemok, run by Bluewater Express and Cataferry, best bought in advance [1]The crossing time, which we could not confirm [2], and the departure on your date
RawaAbout one hour by ferry, hourly and tide dependent, or a resort speedboat of 20 to 30 minutes [3]Which one your resort uses
Pulau BesarA resort speedboat of about 30 minutes, only at high tide [4]The tide table for your date

All of these are reported figures. Confirm each in writing with the operator. Our guide to Mersing jetty to Tioman, and arriving at Tekek or elsewhere covers the Tioman end.

When is a Mersing night worth it?

Use a simple test. Take the time the road leg ends at the jetty, add a buffer of at least 30 minutes, and compare it with the ferry time. If it is later, take the night.

You might also take the night on the way home if your flight or border crossing is early the next day. See overnight in Mersing before the Tioman ferry for how to choose.

What does the combination cost?

  • the road leg or taxi from your starting point to Mersing.
  • a night in Mersing, if you take one.
  • the ferry or boat to the island, if not in the package.
  • the marine park fee, reported at about RM5 for Malaysian adults and RM30 for non-Malaysian adults at Tioman, though one listing reports RM10 at the Mersing jetty [5].
  • parking, if you drive and leave the car.

Our island trip cost calculator adds these up with your own numbers.

A better fit if…

Combining may be a better fit if you live in the south, enjoy a road trip and want to see more than the island. Keep it to the island and Mersing if you want a quiet holiday with the fewest legs.

What should you ask before booking?

  • Which jetty and which ferry time does my package use?
  • Is the transfer from Mersing included?
  • Where can I leave my car safely?
  • What is the last boat back, and what happens if I miss it?

Tell us where you start, which island you are considering and how many nights you have, and we will help you ask the operator and resort about boat times and a protective night.

Common questions

Do I need a night in Mersing before a Tioman ferry?

It depends on your arrival time and your ferry time. If you cannot reach the jetty comfortably before the ferry, a night in Mersing protects you. Ask the operator for the ferry time on your date, then count the road time from Johor Bahru or Changi.

How long is the ferry from Mersing to Tioman?

We could not confirm the crossing time from an operator source, so we will not guess. Ferries are run by Bluewater Express and Cataferry, and tickets are best bought in advance. Ask your resort or the operator for the duration and the departure time on your date.

Is Rawa or Besar easier from Johor Bahru?

Both leave from the Mersing side. One guide reports about an hour by ferry to Rawa, and a resort speedboat of 20 to 30 minutes. For Besar, a resort speedboat of about 30 minutes, running only at high tide. These are reported figures, so confirm them.

Can I combine Singapore and a Malaysian island in one trip?

Yes, many people do. The border crossing and road leg to Mersing add time, so plan a buffer on both ends and keep travel documents ready. Check current border and vehicle rules with official sources before you travel.
