Combining an island holiday with Kuala Terengganu
You are travelling far and wonder if a night in the city makes the island trip easier.
Kuala Terengganu works well as a gateway or a closing night for Redang, Lang Tengah and Kapas. One night in the city mainly buys you a calmer start or finish, not extra sightseeing. The real cost is a hotel night and one or two short transfers.
Start with the island: our Redang island guide explains the jetties. For the wider picture, see how a city night changes the transfer plan.
Why does Kuala Terengganu suit the east-coast islands?
It sits near three departure points. Shahbandar jetty in the city serves a scheduled Redang ferry that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours [2].
Merang jetty serves Redang by speedboat in about 45 minutes [1] and Lang Tengah in about the same time [4]. Marang jetty serves Kapas in about 15 minutes [3].
These are reported figures, so confirm them with your resort. The point is that one city can set you up for several islands. Which jetty you use depends on your booking, not on your preference.
Where does the city night fit?
There are three ways to place it, and each changes your first and last day:
| Option | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| City night before | A calm start, no same-day rush to the boat | Costs a hotel night, island days start the next morning |
| City night after | A safety night before your flight home | Shortens the island by one morning, adds a transfer back |
| No city night | Fly and ferry in one day | Lowest cost, but a late flight or a delay can cost you the boat |
If your flight arrives late afternoon, a boat the same day is often not possible. Our Kuala Terengganu overnight guide shows how to decide.
What does the combination cost?
Count the legs, not only the ticket. A city night adds:
- the hotel night in the city.
- a taxi or e-hailing leg from the airport to the hotel.
- a second leg from the hotel to the jetty.
- possibly a boat ticket or transfer if the package does not include it.
- meals in the city that the island package would have covered.
Against that, you lower the risk of a missed boat. A missed boat may cost a night you have already paid for.
Our jetty connection planner sets buffers around your flight and the boat time. Our Kuala Terengganu airport to Merang jetty guide covers that leg in detail.
What can you do in the city?
Keep it light. A walk, a meal and an early night are enough if you have a morning boat. If your city night comes after the island, you can plan a slow day.
Our guide to a Redang plus Kuala Terengganu city day suggests a loose plan. If the weather turns, see the Kuala Terengganu rainy day plan. Note that most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March [5], so a city stop is also a fallback in the wet season.
A better fit if…
A city night is a better fit if:
- your flight lands in the afternoon or evening.
- you are travelling with children, parents or a lot of luggage.
- your boat leaves in the morning and you do not want to rush.
Skip it if:
- your flight lands early and the boat leaves around midday.
- you have only a short weekend.
- you drive and can reach the jetty early the same morning.
What should you ask before booking?
- Which jetty and which boat time does my package use?
- Is the transfer from the city to the jetty included?
- Can I leave a bag at the hotel while I am on the island?
- What is the last boat back, and can I return the day before my flight?
- Which night would you suggest on my dates?

Common questions
Is Kuala Terengganu a good base before Redang?
It can be, because it has an airport, hotels and the Shahbandar jetty for the scheduled Redang ferry. Many travellers also use it as a night stop before a morning transfer to Merang. Ask your resort which jetty your booking uses before you choose where to sleep.
How long does the ferry from Kuala Terengganu to Redang take?
A resort-run source reports about 1.5 to 2 hours from the Shahbandar jetty. The speedboat from Merang is about 45 minutes. Those are reported figures, so confirm both with the operator and ask which one your package uses.
Should the city night come before or after the island?
Before the island if your flight arrives late or the boat leaves early. After the island if your flight home leaves early and you want a safety night. Either way, avoid a very tight same-day connection on days that matter.
Does the city night cost extra?
Yes, a hotel night is a real cost. You may also pay for a taxi between hotel and jetty. Against that, a calm start can save a missed boat. Add both sides in our cost calculator before deciding.
