Couple's photography on islands: light and locations

You want good photos of the two of you on the island and need to plan the light.

For couple photos on an island, plan around the light, the beach and your gear before you go. Early morning and late afternoon are usually kinder than midday, the direction a beach faces decides where the sun sits, and sand and spray are hard on cameras and phones. This page turns those points into questions.

If you are still choosing where to go, start with which island suits a couple’s first trip. To think about how photography fits a paid package, read photography packages on islands: what is offered.

How do you choose the time of day?

Soft light suits skin and sea. Plan your photos for the early morning or late afternoon, and use the middle of the day for rest, shade and swimming.

Ask the resort which way the beach faces. If it faces east, the morning sun may be behind the horizon and light the water softly. If it faces west, the late afternoon may do the same. The resort can tell you, and so can a map.

Practical implication: pick a beach for the hour you want, not the other way round.

What makes a good location?

Look for shade, space and few people. Check these before you arrive.

What about the season and weather?

Light changes with the weather. Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year.[2] If your dates are near the edges, build in a spare day for cloud or rain.

How do you protect your gear?

Sand and salt are the main enemies, and heat is another.

  • Keep the camera or phone in a zip bag when not in use.
  • Wipe lenses and screens with a clean soft cloth.
  • Avoid changing lenses on a windy beach.
  • Never leave gear in direct sun or a hot boat bench.
  • Use a waterproof pouch near the water.

What do you ask about photographers and rules?

Ask the resort or photographer for the fee, the length of the session, the number of edited photos and the delivery date. Ask whether a drone or an underwater camera is allowed, and whether any marine park rule applies. Activities that damage coral reefs are reported as prohibited,[1] so stay on sand and never stand on or touch coral. See marine park conservation rules during snorkelling.

A better fit if…

Taking your own photos may suit you if you enjoy it and have time. Booking a photographer may suit you if you want a full set and a calm session. Semporna is covered in Semporna islands for photographers.

Tell us the island you are considering and the shots you want, and we will help you ask the resort which way its beach faces and what a photo session would cost.

Common questions

When is the best time of day for couple photos?

Early morning and late afternoon usually give softer light than midday, when shadows are hard and skin can look flat. Ask the resort which way the beach faces so you know whether the sun rises or sets over the water, and plan around that.

Do we need a photographer?

Not necessarily. A tripod, a timer and a friendly guest can do a lot. A photographer helps if you want a set of pictures and are happy to pay. Ask the fee, the length of the session, the number of edited images and the date you receive them.

Can we fly a drone or use a camera in the water?

Ask the resort first. Rules vary, and a marine park adds its own. Activities that damage coral reefs are reported as prohibited, so keep to the sand and shallow sandy areas for water shots, and do not stand on or touch coral.

How do we protect the camera or phone?

Keep it dry and out of direct sun. Use a zip bag with a small desiccant for transit, wipe lenses with a clean cloth, and avoid changing lenses on a windy beach. A waterproof pouch helps near the water.
