A week on the east coast, two islands

You have about a week and are thinking of two islands, but not sure it will feel restful.

A week across two east coast islands can feel restful if you split the nights evenly and count the move between them as a half-day, not a stop. The simplest shape is three nights on Redang, a mainland transfer day, then three nights on Perhentian. Each island has its own boat, its own jetty and its own check-in.

Redang boats leave from Merang, about 45 minutes [1], and Perhentian boats from Kuala Besut, about 35 to 45 minutes [2]. Our Redang island guide and the Perhentian Besar guide cover each end.

How is the week paced?

This is an example for six nights. The hours are assumptions you can replace.

DayWhat happensExample leisure
1Boat to Redang, check-in, restAbout 4 hours
2Full day on RedangAbout 9 hours
3Full day on RedangAbout 9 hours
4Boat back, mainland road leg, boat to PerhentianAbout 1 to 2 hours
5Full day on PerhentianAbout 9 hours
6Full day on PerhentianAbout 9 hours
7Morning swim, boat homeAbout 3 hours

Total leisure is about 44 to 45 hours, against about 52 for six nights on one island. The move costs you roughly a day.

What does each extra night add?

Each extra night adds about one full day of leisure, once the move is paid for.

  1. Five nights: about 34 hours on one island, or about 27 hours across two.
  2. Six nights: about 52 hours on one island, or about 44 across two, as in the table.
  3. Seven nights: another nine hours on whichever island you prefer.

Our guide on how many days an island holiday needs shows the one-island count.

Is the transfer day really a half-day?

It can be longer. You leave Redang by boat, cross the coast by road and take another boat. We have not confirmed the road time between the jetties, so check a map and add buffers.

Plan nothing else on that day. If your resort check-out is early, ask whether you can leave bags until the boat. Our guide on moving bases mid-trip with luggage and toddlers has more.

What about season and fees?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year [3]. Check that both resorts are open on your dates.

Reported marine park rates are RM5 for MyKad adults and RM2 for children, and RM30 and RM15 for others, from secondary sources [4]. Ask each resort whether the fee is included.

Should you split or stay on one island?

Decide with these questions.

  • Do I want variety more than rest?
  • Can my group handle a half-day of travel in the middle?
  • Is my budget able to carry two sets of boat and check-in costs?
  • Will I regret not seeing the other island?

If you answer no to the first two, one island for six nights, or Redang plus Lang Tengah from the same jetty, may feel easier.

A better fit if…

Two islands may suit you if:

  • you like a change of scene and can handle a transfer day.
  • your group is flexible and healthy on boats.
  • you want both a resort island and a chalet island.

One island may suit you better if:

Send us your six or seven nights, who is going and whether you want rest or activity, and we will help you test a two-island split before you book.

Common questions

Is a week on two east coast islands too rushed?

Not if you split the nights evenly and treat the move as a half-day, not a stop. Two islands add a mainland leg and two sets of boat days. If you want deep rest, one island may suit you better. Count the leisure hours before you decide.

How should I split six nights?

Three nights on each island is a simple split. It gives each island at least two full days. A 4 and 2 split can work if one island is your main goal. Ask each resort about check-in and check-out times to count real hours.

How do I get from Redang to Perhentian?

Redang boats leave from Merang and Perhentian boats from Kuala Besut, so you cross the mainland between them. We have not confirmed the road time, so check a map and plan the day as a transfer day with a buffer.

Does the marine park fee apply on both islands?

Reported rates are RM5 for MyKad adults and RM2 for children, and RM30 and RM15 otherwise, but research here is secondary. Ask each resort whether the fee is included and confirm the current rate for both islands.
