Sunrise on the east coast islands

You will get up early and want to know which beach gets the best sunrise.

On the east coast, sunrise is the strong show. Beaches that face east over open sea can give a lovely first hour, and Pasir Panjang on Redang’s east side is one example. The catch is timing: you need to be on the island, not on a boat, and awake early.

Our guide on best time of day for island photography explains the light. For Redang itself, see the Pulau Redang guide.

Which beaches face the sunrise?

Look for beaches on the east side of an island, facing open sea. Pasir Panjang is on the east side of Redang and is the largest beach there, with about half a dozen resorts [1]. Whether you see the sun lift out of the water still depends on hills, cloud and haze.

Do not guess from a name. Open the resort’s location on a map, then ask which direction the beach faces.

What is the best plan for the morning?

Keep it simple. This plan suits most resorts.

  1. Set an alarm for about forty-five minutes before sunrise, using the time for your date.
  2. Take a light layer, a torch and water.
  3. Walk to the beach, find a spot and wait.
  4. Stay for the half hour after the sun clears, when the light is softest.
  5. Return for breakfast, a nap and a slow day.

Ask the resort whether breakfast starts after your sunrise walk, so you do not miss a meal.

How do boats and timing fit in?

Sunrise on arrival day is unlikely. On one reported Perhentian route, the earliest speedboats are around seven or eight in the morning [2]. Your first full morning is the one to plan for.

If you leave on a morning boat, you may get a shorter walk before packing. See our realistic island beach day timeline for how arrival, full and departure days differ.

What about season and weather?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year [3]. Sunrise plans only make sense for the open months.

Cloud and rain can mute any sunrise, so plan for several mornings, not one. Our note on tides and beach time, including when sandbars appear helps you pair the water level with the light.

What should you ask the resort?

  • Which direction does my beach face?
  • Is the view blocked by hills, trees or buildings?
  • Is the path lit, and is it safe to walk before dawn?
  • When does breakfast start?
  • Can I borrow a torch, or is there a gate that closes at night?

A better fit if…

A sunrise-led trip is a better fit if you like quiet mornings, early nights and a camera in your hand. It suits couples and photographers who enjoy the day starting slowly.

A sunset-led trip may be a better fit if you prefer late starts. In that case, read sunset spots on Malaysian islands and consider a west-coast island.

Tell us which island you are looking at and how early you can get up, and we will help you ask the resort which beach faces east, when breakfast starts and whether the first boat suits your plan.

Common questions

Which east-coast island beaches get a sunrise?

Beaches that face east over open sea. On Redang, Pasir Panjang is on the east side, so it is a likely candidate, but hills, trees and haze still matter. Check each beach on a map and ask the resort which direction it faces and whether the view is clear.

Can I see sunrise on the day I arrive?

Probably not. Early speedboats on one reported Perhentian route start around seven or eight in the morning, which may be after the sun is already up. Plan your sunrise for the first full morning on the island, and treat arrival day as rest.

What if the weather is cloudy at sunrise?

Cloud can still give soft colour, and the best part is sometimes just before the sun clears the horizon. Go out anyway if the beach is a short walk. If it rains, go back to bed. Nothing is lost, because sunrise happens again tomorrow.

Is it safe to walk the beach before dawn?

We cannot declare any path safe. Ask the resort whether the path is lit, whether the beach has rocks or rubbish after the tide, and who else is about. Bring a small torch, wear closed shoes and tell someone you are going.
