Long-weekend island trip: when it truly works

A public holiday gives you three or four days off, and you wonder if that suits an island.

A long weekend works for an island trip when four things line up: a short journey to the jetty, a boat at a good hour, a season with open resorts, and a booking made early. When they do, you get one and a half to two full island days. When they do not, you may spend most of the break on the road.

Check the conditions in order. Our overview of how many days you need for an island holiday places a long weekend in context, and the jetty connection planner tests your own travel times.

What are the four conditions?

Run the test below with your own dates.

ConditionWhat good looks like
JourneyA few hours to the jetty, not most of a day
BoatA morning boat out and a late boat back
SeasonResorts open on your dates
BookingDates and rooms confirmed early

If three or four are good, the long weekend probably works. If only one is, consider a different island or a different break.

How many full island days does a long weekend give?

Count from the break, not the label. Here is an example with a Friday-to-Monday break.

  1. Friday: travel and arrive. A half-day at best.
  2. Saturday: a full island day.
  3. Sunday: a full island day.
  4. Monday: pack, depart and travel home. A morning at most.

That gives two full days and two half days, about four to five waking leisure hours on the half days. If the journey is long, Friday may be a half-day that starts late and Monday may start early.

Why does the season matter on a holiday weekend?

Some public holidays fall in the northeast monsoon, when most east-coast resorts close, roughly November to February or March [1]. Exact dates vary by resort and year.

If your holiday falls then, ask about islands on other coasts, whose seasons differ, and confirm the resort’s own opening dates. Never plan on a weather promise.

How crowded will it be?

Long weekends are popular, so expect fuller boats, longer queues and peak pricing. Arrive at the jetty earlier than usual and keep the plan for the first day simple.

Our guide to peak-season surcharges explains how those charges show up on the quote.

What should you ask?

  • Are my dates peak, and what is the surcharge?
  • Is there a minimum stay on this weekend?
  • What are the boat times on each day, and how early must I arrive?
  • Can I leave bags before check-in?
  • What is the cancellation rule if my plans change?

A better fit if…

A long weekend may be a better fit if:

  • the island is within a few hours of you.
  • you can book early.
  • you want a short, simple break.

A longer break may be a better fit if:

  • the journey is long.
  • you want snorkelling and a rest day.
  • you travel with young children.

What is the next step?

Write the dates of the break and count your full days. Send them to us and we will help you decide whether the break is enough.

Tell us the holiday dates and where you start, and we will help you test whether a long weekend gives you a real island trip or mostly a journey.

Common questions

Is a long weekend enough for an island trip?

It can be, if the journey to the jetty is short and you accept that you will have about one and a half to two full island days. It works best with a morning boat on the first day and a late boat on the last. If the journey is long, the break may feel like mostly travel.

Should I book early for a public-holiday weekend?

Yes, start asking as soon as you know the dates. Popular dates fill early, and holiday weekends often have peak pricing and minimum stays. Ask for a written quote and the cancellation rule.

Will boats be crowded on a long weekend?

They can be. Ask the operator about the boat schedule on your dates and how early to arrive at the jetty. Queues at the counter and at check-in can be longer than usual.

Can a long weekend fall in the monsoon?

Yes. Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and some holiday weekends fall within it. Ask about other coasts if your dates are in that period.
