Insurance as an add-on for island trips

The quote offers insurance for a small fee and you are unsure what it does on an island.

Insurance as an add-on is worth a close look when it names the events it covers and the events it excludes. Ask for the policy wording, not only the price, and check it against any cover you already hold. This guide shows what matters for an island trip, and it is information, not financial advice.

This guide belongs to our guide to choosing an island package. For what package insurance covers, see insurance in island packages: what is and is not covered.

What is the difference between the boat’s insurance and mine?

These two are easy to mix up.

Reported rules say the boat operator must carry passenger insurance [1]. That is the operator’s cover for passengers aboard, and the source also notes that advice to provide life jackets for all passengers comes from the maritime agency. It does not protect your belongings, your medical costs on land or a cancelled trip.

Your own cover is separate. It may come from a travel policy, a credit card, an employer or a family plan. Check what you already hold before you add anything.

Which five cover areas matter on an island trip?

AreaThe question to ask
Sea travelIs a boat transfer between jetty and island covered?
MedicalDoes it cover treatment on the island and on the mainland?
EvacuationIs moving a sick traveller off the island covered?
CancellationWhich reasons are covered, and which are excluded?
BelongingsIs a phone or camera covered if wet or lost at sea?

Some of these depend on exact wording. A policy that says “sea travel” may exclude certain activities, so ask.

Why does medical cover deserve a proper look?

A university study of box jellyfish reported severe stings off Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, and advised seeking immediate medical care [2]. That does not mean your trip is risky. It means medical cover and the route to a clinic are worth a plain question.

Ask how a traveller reaches a doctor from your island, who pays, and whether the policy covers that route. Our guide on marine park rules for snorkellers cover the other side.

What about cancellation because of weather?

Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly October to March, and ferries are restricted [3]. If a resort is closed when you travel, the resort may offer its own refund or rebooking rule.

Insurance is a different layer. Read whether it covers weather, a missed boat or a closed resort, and which words trigger the claim. Our guide on cancellation waivers compares the two.

How should I read the wording?

Use this short checklist on any policy or add-on.

  1. What events are covered, as a list?
  2. What is excluded, as a list?
  3. What is the maximum payout per item and per trip?
  4. What must I do to claim, and by when?
  5. When does the cover start and end?

A short list of covered events with a long list of exclusions tells you something. A good add-on states both plainly.

What should I ask the agency?

  • Who provides the insurance, and can I see the wording?
  • Does it cover a boat transfer to and from the island?
  • What does it say about weather and a closed resort?
  • Does it overlap with my card or employer cover?

A better fit if…

Buying the add-on may suit you if you hold no other cover, travel with children or older parents, or have a fixed date and a larger booking. Relying on your own policy may be a better fit if it already covers sea travel, medical care and cancellation, and the add-on repeats it.

Tell us your group, your dates and whether you already hold any cover, and we will help you ask the agency for the policy wording rather than just the price.

Common questions

Does the boat operator's insurance cover me?

Not necessarily your whole trip. Reported rules say passenger insurance is required for boats, but that is the operator's cover for passengers on the boat. Ask what it covers, for whom and up to what point. It does not replace cover for medical costs, cancellation or belongings.

Is insurance sold with the package the same as buying my own?

Not always. Package insurance can be a simple add-on with a short list of events, while your own policy may cover more. Ask for the policy wording and compare it with any cover you already hold through a card, employer or family plan.

Does insurance cover a cancelled trip because of the monsoon or rough sea?

It depends on the wording. Some policies cover cancellation for listed reasons only, and some exclude weather unless stated. Read the list of covered reasons and the exclusions, and ask the agency to point to the exact line.

Can I buy insurance after I book?

Sometimes, but the rules differ. Cover for cancellation may need to start soon after booking. Ask the provider when cover begins and what is excluded if you buy late.
