A seven-night honeymoon across two stays

You want a long honeymoon that feels like two chapters, without a tiring move.

A seven-night honeymoon can work well as two stays, usually four nights and then three. The move falls best on the morning of night five. It costs you roughly half a day, so do it only if the second place gives you something the first cannot.

Our guide to how to narrow down honeymoon islands in Malaysia helps you choose the first base. Then read when a split stay costs more than it saves before you commit to two.

What does the middle move really cost?

The move is not free, even when the boat ticket is small. You pack, check out, travel, check in and unpack, and that takes most of a morning.

Here is a simple count for a seven-night stay:

One baseTwo stays
NightsSevenFour plus three
Usable full daysAbout sixAbout five and a half
Packing and movingOnceTwice
VarietyOne beach, one rhythmTwo beaches, two rhythms

The cost is about half a day. If the second stay changes the mood, that half day is a fair price. If it only changes the room, it is not.

On the Perhentian islands, for example, a taxi boat from Besar to Kecil has been reported at about RM20 [1]. That figure comes from a blog, so confirm the fare with your resort.

How should seven nights be paced?

A plan that suits many couples looks like this:

  • Nights one and two: arrive slowly, sleep well and walk the beach.
  • Night three: your first boat outing or snorkel, if you both enjoy that.
  • Night four: a quiet day, then pack in the evening.
  • Move morning: take an early boat, with the afternoon free.
  • Nights five and six: the part you remember, with the dinner or the sunset you planned.
  • Night seven: rest, pack and keep the last morning calm.

Notice that the move sits in the middle, not at the end. A move on the last day leaves you tired on the way home.

What should the second stay add?

Choose the second stay for what the first lacks. If the first is a quiet beach, make the second a place with a restaurant or two. If the first is lively, make the second quieter.

Our guide on two nights on a social beach and two on a quiet one shows this mix in a shorter stay. Check the season too, because most east-coast islands are closed or very limited during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February [2]. Exact dates vary by resort and year.

What should you ask both resorts?

  • Can you hold luggage if our check-in or check-out times do not match?
  • Is the transfer between the two stays included, and who books it?
  • What can you arrange for a honeymoon, and what does it cost?
  • Is there a quiet or private dining option, and does it need booking?
  • What happens to the second booking if the boat cannot sail on the move morning?

The last question matters most. A cancelled boat on move day could shorten one stay. Ask how each resort handles it, in writing.

A better fit if…

Two stays may be a better fit if you want a change of scene and like planning. One base may be a better fit if you want to unpack once, sleep in, and have no morning with a schedule. See the honeymoon island budget guide to compare what each choice costs.

Tell us your dates, your wedding date if it helps, and what you each want from the week, and we will help you test whether a split stay or a single base suits you better.

Common questions

Is it worth splitting a seven-night honeymoon in two?

It is worth it if the two stays give you different things, such as a quiet beach first and a livelier base second. It is not worth it if you only want rest, because the move costs half a day. If rest is the goal, one island for all seven nights is simpler.

Where should the move fall in a seven-night stay?

Usually after night three or four, once you have settled but before the stay feels long. Plan the move for the morning, with a lighter afternoon. Avoid moving on your first or last day, when travel already takes most of the time.

How much does the move cost?

Mostly it costs time, and sometimes a boat ticket. A taxi boat between two Perhentian islands has been reported at about RM20 per person, but the figure is from a blog and may have changed. Ask each resort what it charges and whether the transfer is included.

Can the resorts arrange the surprise for the second stay?

Many resorts can arrange decorations or a dinner, but they differ in what they offer and charge. Ask both resorts in writing what they can do on your dates. Tell the second resort it is your honeymoon when you book, not on arrival.
